Song I Wrote for Doreen

here are the lyrics
music is coming soon
yeah, soon as I can get Prince to record it

---

It's only pride or prejudice
that's the reason that it's come to this
goin to Boston to have tea with Jane Austin
cuz it's only pride or prejudice

You think that you are E'mly Dickenson
I think that you're Sylvia Plath
You think that I'm out to Naked Lunch
I think that I need a bath

We are both in mortal fear of the mirror
Jealous of ourselves

My heart's too big, I guess my head's too small
I can't seem to understand it all
I'll just play the cards the way they fall
guess I'll drown myself in alcohol

We are both in mortal fear of the mirror
Jealous of ourselves

Don't you run, no, don't you hide away
Find a way to try and try away
You can shop around to buy a way
But I'll grow feathers and I'll fly away

We are both in mortal fear of the mirror
Jealous of ourselves

It's only pride or prejudice
that's the reason that it's come to this
goin to Boston to have tea with Jane Austin
cuz it's only pride or prejudice

I done know Clay
I liked it a lot
but you know what I know about poetry.

mortal fear
plath in the mirror
"poetry is the blood jet"
what was she 36?
I don't think it was the mirror that got Sylvia
Kate Moses thought it was a fatal episode of pms

Doreen pardon me for butting in, I thought it was pretty interesting too
I really like plath a lot
I love here truly
but I stopped trying to learn anything from her death
it was what she wrote while alive that learned me..

I also like plath cause she used to give firecracker the "squirms" she said.
I thought that was an interesting remark. That woman hates me. Funny because I could see why jamelah could. Even anniefay. I suppose Caryn is just sticking up for her little sister.

Plath don't squirm me but what do I know about the phenomenology of female spatiality? It was that remark by Kate Moses that killed the curiosity of my cat.

Vivla the difference
hey I am trilingual

viva music
viva poetry

thanks for the poem clay sorry about the ramble
I can't wait to hear the music too.

I hardly look in the mirror anymore
since I stopped shaving and brushing my teeth

The music turned out lovely! I like the tune. Good job. It doesn't have a bridge, tho. ;) Not a critique, just an observation.

About the fact that the song was written for me, all I can say is I don't understand the lyrics. I don't know why it was directed toward me or written for me. But I thank you for thinking of me when you wrote it.

I never read Jane Austin's book "Pride and Prejudice" unless I read it when I was in elementary school or something and totally forgot about it. So I don't get the reference. I try to have pride in my work and in my life but not too much pride because I find humility to be a more rewarding goal. But you have to have some pride to keep your self esteem. I don't have a prejudiced bone in my body.

I don't think I'm Emily Dickinson (please note correct spelling ;)) but I've written a few rhyming poems on occasion that might have been influenced by her work. I AM probably more like Sylvia Plath in that I've contemplated sticking my head in a gas oven more often than I care to admit but unfortunately, the oven I have is electric. I don't think my writing is anything similar to Plath's. Hers was less lyrical, more free form, and very depressing. I like to throw a little humor in like the other DP on occasion and enjoy the closing rhyming couplet quite often.

I never read Naked Lunch. I tried to several times. I found it boring because stories of drug abuse simply bore me. In my past I watched too many people destroy themselves. I think you need a bath, too, sometimes. lol

One thing I'm not afraid of is the mirror. I have mirrors all over the house. I love mirrors because I can correct my posture as I walk by, fix my makeup, make sure my belly isn't hanging out too badly in whatever outfit I have on but MOSTLY because they make the rooms look bigger and reflect light from many angles.

I'm not jealous of you or of myself so I don't get that line either.

You do have a big heart, this is true. Your head isn't too small though. I think you have a big head also. :) But that's the pride part of the song coming through I guess.

I can't seem to understand any of it, so if you can understand some of it but not all of it, you're doing better than me. I wish we'd play cards more often. Playing gin rummy with you was one of the most enjoyable evenings I've had with you in several years. When we played a few weeks ago, I think that's the most time we've spent together in a couple of years anyway. I play them the way they fall too. We've got that much in common. What else can you do?

Please don't drown yourself in alcohol. EAT something! You will get malnutrition and die if you don't eat more regularly.

I'm not running and I never hide. I'm flying to California on Friday, though. Unfortunately your feathers can't take you that far.

That's as far as I got when I analyzed the lyrics. You refuse to tell me what it means and why it was written to me so I figured I'd reply to the lyrics by telling you why I can't really identify with the lyrics.

It's a really nice song, tho! Truly! I like it!

Thanks for sharing it. Would you like me to move this thread to the Music & Spoken Word forum?

I'm glad you liked the music
though is spelled though, though

I appreciate the line by line criticism

but it was just a gift to you
don't get your head too far up in the horse's mouth

mirrors are the most terrifying things
they mean that you have to look at yourself
of course glass mirrors don't see you as well
as the human mirrors that are around you

I'm not 'splainin, Lucy

Let's play gin rummy
you know what the stakes are

tho is a correct spelling of though
scrabble word.. perfectly acceptable

sorry, i didn't mean to criticize or critique your song!
I loved the tune and i'm honored you wrote it for me.

But for 3 days I've asked you what it means and you refuse to explain tho (though) you have explained it to my daughter who also isn't telling because she has apparently been sworn to secrecy.

She says it's a puzzle I have to figure out. I don't have time for puzzles. I just don't understand the lyrics.

Sincere apologies for not understanding how they relate to me.

I do thank you for the song! It's lovely!
