Kafka famously said "a book is an axe for the frozen sea within us" and so is a song, a breadbox of lyrics, a slice of the baked grain of memory, a flash of violet juxtaposed as shadow against the canary yellow of the highlight the green wine bottle gathers at the base of its neck ( D's making of my painting into a Studio8 banner, above) . . .

All of these are emergencies, in the correct and original sense of that word-- those things that sling themselves out of the grey, metallic stream of sameness-- those things that "rage against the dying of the light" as Dylan Thomas advised, and those things that refute the pressing conclusion that, as Bill said in "Hamlet", the world is "an unweeded garden . . . things rank in nature . . .possess it merely . . ."

Thanks for the whisper and cool-breathed strand of music out of the dark.
