Third Estate Sale

another ramble from Zen Upchuck...

Okay, one of my pleasures in life right now is sitting back in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee and a real honest to goodness (no kidding) newspaper. I do the crossword, if I can (got to keep those brain cells plastic), see what is happening in the world (not much good stuff here), read the editorials (who's pissed off about what and whom?), and maybe a funny or two (i have my faves.)

Maybe a restaurant will be reviewed that looks interesting or there is an opening at the museum or gallery that catches my eye or something is happening that I want to catch, like a new movie. For instance, I read yesterday that the guy that does Friday Night Lights is remaking the Frank Herbert novels and is redoing Dune...now that is really cool! Can hardly wait for that one. Chihuly is showing at the El Paso Museum of Art and that is not to be missed. The Blue Lizard restaurant looks interesting, the reviewer loved it. I want to see that new spanish language film about illegal aliens (a boy and his mom) and the subtitles won't bother me. Gibson Guitars is suing the makers and sellers of Rock Band, that air guitar game because they say they have a patent somewhere...you can patent air guitar bands?

I like reading the local news especially... One should keep up with what is going on around them for sure. The news about Juarez, Mexico is distressing lately (38 bodies in a back yard) and now Palomas (a really small town in Mexico just down the road) is really up shit creek. Yesterday the police chief there asked for asylum at the border crossing because he was so afraid of the drug cartels and the other two officers in that town are nowhere to be found. Palomas has no law right now, four shootings on the street. Crazy! I was just there with friends and most recently my kids in December. I love Palomas, across from Columbus where Pancho Villa invaded the US.

Yes, the news can be upsetting and that cup of coffee can grow cold but newspapers are the great third estate in America. They are certainly a dying breed, all that paper, the internet, word travels at the speed of light nowadays and news gets old fast and new news is constant, faster than print. But still, for me sitting down and reading the news is a luxury that only those of us not rushing off somewhere can afford and it is truly wonderful that I can.
