when he was younger, his eyes and the ocean used to change at the same time, he could see a bump out in the water, and ride it all the way into shore
his friends in town loved him, as did i...
my children thought he was a hero-as did all his nieces and nephews.. and very large family
he surfed, laughed and knew how to do things that many years on kauai teaches you.the things i see as being important came from that time as well as other times...
the hurricane iniki was coming in 1992, and i was in the bathroom, having run away from home at 13, i looked around my bathroom and thought"Isnt it nice that my towels match for the first time in my life"
i knew right then my priorities were screwed up-[clueless]we put paneling and tape on every window in the house, turned the gas off, and went to hanalei bay resort-the dalmation,"spot" the cat, my sons and my husband all sat and waited for hours for the eye to cross, instead it turned and ripped the other way 225 miles and hour, steven spielburg ran away like a weenie in a helicopter.. before the hurricane i was not clear at all what was happening=
when we walked outside, two stories above us had been sucked off, and the cat had had it with being in the bathroom with us, the dog was cool. kids were furious i wouldnt let them play in the hurricane-
one of our friends tried to play in the hurricane and 12 years later is now losing his leg-
he thought he could fly= and the wind dropped him fast in a tree.
hurricane parties
when it was all over, we walked out...ok.. trees were accross the road, and we went about chain sawing them so people in haena could get out.
then the town returned to our homes, there were some unhappy campers... the army came- it is many years later, and now i can see how iniki changed kauai in another way..
