topanga canyon

Post by creativesoul » October 27th, 2012, 11:29 am

primo , my husband was out of town for four months, and home for two weeks.. then he would go back to nigeria. i tried to 'fit' everything in, while he was home- fill all my needs, buy everything i could not buy while he was gone- i had tried to be an american woman living abroad but found it rather difficult- getting my nails done was not what i wanted to do and i was from california, back then -this was something i was proud of.i liked cantalope in winter, and melons from all over- i was spoiled see...and third world countries= well you can have a pile a money and there just isnt anything to buy-black market diapers, and canned food....people starving - my husband said'you can give away in a month what it takes six months to make'
it was true

we were in a hurry, i was always in a hurry- ambition was in my shoes, which were italian, and i thought that if i ran fast enough, that sucess would run along side me- so as usual ; i was late for something, and i had the youngest son mike, strapped into a baby seat , and jess was about five- primo was a 'deep' thinker, and was barely present- he would be in second gear for like a half hour, so i wouldnt let him drive in los angeles=it was a place that 3 seconds could mean life or death- 100,ooo people driven and 'hurried' as well in competion for a piece of the american pie.
he was in the passenger seat= he said' i am hungry'... there was a health food store in the lil town of topanga and i ran in and grabbed what looked like a cake of some sort- and two juices- like hand squeezed= i did not read labels- i thought it was a waste of time
back on down the mountain= towards malibu, santa monica-
i pass the cake thing from the health food store to mike- he is about two- and was born in italy- where they do not believe in giving a small child any spices for the first year- i let the grandma take control- she loved caring for that lil baby more than life itself- she would hold him and say'come buono' [he is so good]
mike ate some and i was watching the road, making sure we did not fly off the cliff-and mike starts screaming- the cake was made of tofu and cayene pepper- and i pass the drink in the bottle to my husband primo who opens it and gives some to mike- as it turns out- it was lime juice and more cayenne pepper - the label said 'cleansing drink' who is now screaming even louder- primo is skitzing because he tastes it and then yells' 'jana what are doing jesus this is hot?!'
i am now laughing at the insanity of the situation....mike is screaming and jess is looking on like 'how did i get born into this crew?"my laughter pisses him off even more-
primo is holding his forehead an nose by the time we get to the sea, like he has fallen from heaven and is stuck here on the planet with three of us- which is true- he is... but the gifts we have given each other- are a subject of controversy for many- my sons grew up to be amazing people- and the road on the way to and from topanga canyon holds many thoughts - and people in our lives- heart and soul- still ride with us...
