Once upon a time, imagination and reality passed through the same front door on their way to lunch. And then they hashed out their differences... and then they set out into deserts which could not tell the difference between the two of them, like a shape-shifting vehicle flowing out over cracked, hot earth, through boiling, wavering reflection, flying arrow-straight toward something which might not exist, like the first ship setting out across the flat-earth ocean toward a dropoff into outer space.
The simplicity of it is exquisite.
Those places are equal parts motion and myth.... Sit atop a rattlesnake porch in late afternoon and observe a filmy horizon; one which, if penetrated, might prove to be a fluid abstraction, beating reality at its own game, or at least holding it at arm's length for awhile.
Claim the lowest point of the desert floor as your own. Drink six shots of whiskey and scribble timeless thoughts about a woman, to be thrown away tomorrow at the nearest motel. They won't find you here. That's the whole point of it. Crank the music as high as it will go and wander out into a parched desert gale, noting its
incongruent warm welcome while you generate erratic orbits around a dome light and recite entire scenes from a Sergio Leone flick until the orbits converge toward another shot.
Scene over.
