back from the funeral
what a life...97 years
good to see my Virginian cousins
down in the Shenandoah valley
blue mist hanging about the Drive
country folk can be so real
makes one sit up take notice
they are church folks to a man
the women can off cook their asses off
the men have big machinery
and tanned necks and arms
the vibe is solid and I wonder
what I would be like if Dad had stayed
but he didn't want be a farmer
so he packed us up...I was born
in Staunton....pronounced Stanton
no aw sound...birthplace of
Woodrow Wilson, but I just call him Woody
lousy president but that's not my fault
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

condolences to you & your family for what I presume is your dad's passing
wow, 97 years - a good run! hope he was fit to the end.
my cousins on my dad's side all regard us NH folk as country bumpkins
too sophisticated for the likes of us
we cannot appreciate the finer things in life
like expensive shoes
iToys
palatial houses with housekeepers
and gardeners
to care for the lawn
yawn

true story:
one if these cousins kids was tragically killed in an auto accident
so I drove down to East Longmeadow MA to offer my condolences
East Longmeadow is home to the nuveau riche
self-important
shallow & materialistic
parking lot full of late-model SUVs
immaculate urban assault vehicles
driven by fashion model men
shiny shoes, carefully moussed hair
and their beautiful wives
expensive clothes, latest fashions

aaaannnnd then......
here comes New Hampshire

9-year old Toyota
with a broken exhaust baffle
rattling like a buckboard
spring mud spattered up to the windows
missing hubcap
back seat piled high...
sleeping bag, waders,
hunting vest, spare flannel shirt

priceless
their looks of horror
at the barbarian from the north
crashing their party

made me proud

sasha,,,actually it was Dad's sister
now dad at 92 is the last of six kids...
country cousins tell the best stories
an art and tradition in the mountains
what we are in this life is a amalgam
of stories
that is what life is...if you ignore
them, you diminish the brilliance
so we ate and talked and laughed
we caught up as the young ones ran
about, I asked one little blonde girl
"how many pieces of cake have you had ?"
She smile broadly between her pigtails,
" Four" ....then added, "and two brownies !"
know what your talkin' about sasha
all that pretense doesn't live up n the hills
the folks are real, the real McCoys...
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

Yes yes, the oral tradition keeping family history alive...
while the cousins on my dad's side are obsessed with their upward mobility,
those on my mom's are refreshingly real,
and I've remained close to them.
Our mutual gram suffered for years with Alzheimer's
so there were few tears shed at her passing
and we still laugh about the circus her funeral became...
the hung-over pallbearers...
the ne'er do-well cousin who not only slipped a deck of cards into the casket
but dealt the old gal a royal flush...
the torrential rain, the lightning, the mud...
...a sordid tale that improves with each telling...

Damn right. The way I see it, if my dirty car and cheap Walmart boat shoes trump the fact that I've driven 2 hours down to Yuppie Land to pay my respects, then next time I'll just stay the fuck home.

just back from taking
a friend for dental surgery
ooooweee is her face swollen
but that's why god made percoset
and oxy...they do have a place
on the medicine wheel, it's just some folks
like to party with them, swallow them down
with booze and see what happens
we had a sportscaster here in Baltimore
kept breaking into his neighbors house
stealing her drugs, so the old woman set up some cameras
and bam, he went down...but not for long
you get a lot of rope when you come clean
tell the world you were addicted
he's back on the air
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

elton john covered in the park
this amazing band ends the show
covering the opening song on one of the sides
to Yellow Brick Road, Funeral For a Friend
Love Lies Bleeding, Damn !...Nobody
covers that song !....and here it is
So perfect !......I am transported
to a place and time I am comfortable with,
a place I know intimately, a youthful place
where I soaked in the tub of exploration
in music, in life...pushing the limits
of creativity...take me with you musicians
I won't fight you a bit
