I believe that support
may be tangible, like

they make up
this new atmosphere
to be breathed, absorbed
manifesting into your life

it's like when you don't hear the music
as much as feel it

move

sometimes felt more than heard
echoes of something formless

but the dance says more
the words are just flotsam
scraps tossed out a car window
landing at the edge of the road
showing the way

on what should be a safe place to learn

a new mantra
an exhortation oh so pious

that it sets my teeth on edge:

always, it seems, from someone
a third my age
who's never stepped outside
the circle of light
at whose center
their own beliefs lie...

after 35 years as a lab rat
doing industrial research
designing & conducting experiments
making predictions,
mistakes, blunders,
and the all-too rare breakthrough
last thing I need
is advice on research from some kid
who can't tell a z-score from a hockey score
a significance test from a spelling test
or a Box plot from a burial plot...
proof, I guess,
that I have passed into Curmudgeonhood

or at least willing to process new information

I still call it hiking
even though it's just a walk
can't see well enough
to tell if the image in the viewfinder
is correctly framed
much less in focus
can't hear the wind in the trees
unless it speaks up
and I miss a lot of my typos
because...
well, just because.
I'd say it happens to all of us -
but it doesn't
only to those
lucky enough to get this far
this trail's gonna get a lot steeper
it ain't gonna relent
and at some point I'm gonna fall -
but man, what a view.......

made it this far
up the slope
a lot more trail behind me
than on ahead
but everyday
there is something
to wonder about
