old Rolling Stones
in a box from 1993
a history lesson inside a magazine
who is hot, what is for sale
what are the trends
so much that I have forgotten
and I wonder where the old observations go
are they still circling around in my head
just waiting for me to enlist them
so much was restored looking at these images
so it wasn't completely gone
but what lobe was it living in
is there a section in my head that's like an attic
with dusty objects waiting for renewal
or maybe it's like The Cloud
an offsite storage area, or a limbo basement
stacked with boxes to the underside of the ceiling
and why am i asking myself this ?
just because, I opened a box full of old Rolling Stones
...........come to think of it, I Am an old Rolling Stone

beginnings

Riding Bareback

the sun offered a needed interlude
for an angry young man
stepping out into the new summer air
trying to squeeze a drop of meaning
from the establishment of war,
from the cosmic twists of the rising moon....
and a beautiful child was born
in the psychedelic seeds germinating

in the stalls of unstable stables, and we
knew we would no longer need saddles

our knights would wear white satin,
the red doors would be painted black.
we'd sail in yellow submarines along
the green river with brown-eyed girls
we'd dance with the devil with the blue dress on.
We were the new riders, galloping
through the purple sage, searching
for a heart of gold, in the sunshine of our love

The palette explodes
nature's expression.....
a rainbow smile from
ear to ear, the pampas grass
wiggles like a hula girl
on your dashboard
the creek ripples with
striated op art for eyes
that need something new
I find my favorite bench
plop down with my rucksack
nibble on cashews and mandarins
how could I possibly invent something
better than this
immersed in art
with snacks

nothing matters....
'cept the sincerity
of affection
the rest is just trying
to figure that out
all the roads we walked
looking to be something,
all those nights coddling
good books and booze
a blunt force blunt,
searching for meaning
deep as the deep blue ocean
when it was there all along
in our heart and soul....
empathy and love waiting
oh, it's not like we didn't have it
or know about it even
it's just we didn't quite grasp it,
its significance, cuz
if we did, we would have stopped looking
and here I sit with my rum and coke
the gong of the bong singing in my ear
writing to you about it
but I just can't say enough

they sat across from us
defiant
a bit condescending
"what qualifications does she have?"
they demanded
"what does she know of policy?"
"will she end the war in Gaza?"
"will she help the economy?"
and rather than addressing these points
one of my companions (a military vet)
heatedly reviled a draft-dodging misogyinist
born with a $400 million spoon up his ass
who squandered several fortunes
while cheating on all three of his wives
leaving his bills unpaid
carousing with child molesters
and racking up criminal indictments -
but they just snickered:
"oh!" they said
"so the choice is just based on feelings?"
and though I've built my life
on science and data and the tangible,
I said nothing, but thought
"what else is there that matters?"

what matters is
the flag flying free
the nation whole again
the laws held high
an eagle soaring in a blue sky
sanity returning
a smile for your neighbor
pride in your country
just feelings

it's so simple
why didn't I see this before?
why did it take me so long to discover?
how could I not see it?
the way to silence the din
the doomsayers
(one of whom
- I admit -
was me)
the fearmongers
the endless talking heads
warming the climate
with their proclamations
prognostications and predictions
raising dire concerns (and blood pressure)
with dark scenarios...
when all I needed to do
was turn it off...
TURN
IT
OFF...
and with a mouse click or two
CNN
The Young Turks
Fox
MSNBC
have magically become
Bach's Concerto in A minor for flute & harpsichord
Symphony #7 in B flat by William Boyce
& Vivaldi's Four Seasons!
I must remember this the next time
I mistake the news for reality

not the band
so called experts parading
on to the screen
the well paid pundits
we are to believe
that this handfull
of so-called authorities
will give us all the truth
we need
but first let's break
for a Lexus commercial
don't go away
we have so much more to say
we have that arcane info
you crave
we leave you waiting for the finish
to our scary stories
but wait
now check out our drug ads first
because we have medicines
for diseases you never heard of
and you could feel so much better
if you ask your shill physician
if you can get some, just ignore
the side effects like death
and you'll be fine
