finally a vehicle that fits my nature
a Subaru Forester
why didn't I think of this before
it blends in with my true love
hikes in the forest
and I believe this will be
the beginning of my return to the woods
my walking sticks and tick spray
are already onboard
my last scans were very good as were
my labs, and my oncologist said
we are going to give you a break
from treatment
oh my, this...after 3 and a half years
was like music to my ears....
and just before the new year
we'll schedule more labs, a cat scan
of your torso, and an MRI of your brain
to see if your body is fighting off
this melanoma on its own....golly
that's sounds fantastic, now I will
need to recreate stamina and energy
before those ventures to the forest
will be possible. but at least
I have the right vehicle to get me there
the death of empathy is the birth of barbarism

what better place to train
for forest tramps
than the forest itself?
easy does it -
a mile here
a mile there
and don't forget
that when you turn around
you're only halfway there...

and beware trail seduction -
the harlot we elderly hikers
so often succumb to:
"maybe just a little further -
...then I'll turn around"
'just around the bend up ahead -
...then I'll turn around"
"up to that hilltop -
...then I'll turn around"
she's very persuasive
her charms are hard to resist
so check your reserves
before surrendering

and above all -
enjoy
welcome back
I remember the pain of loss
and the joy of reunion
and wish you the same tears of happiness
that overwhelmed me
.

auto independence
it's almost like your first
the freedom
and the joy
so glad your body
is up for travel
let the forest
and the open road
heal you
I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach 10,000 stars how not to dance.
