All over my place

When i moved back to the
city I stayed up all night
listening to the boxes
wondering if any came along
Deadly copperheads
The baby ones the worst
Black snakes all over
the place when I moved
back to the country in '05
Once saw one as big as a tire
sidewind across the road
Only good thing bout snakes
is that they love to eat rats

Jam spiders
Jam ants
Jam roaches
Jam dem silverfish
Jam possums
Jam big fat racoons
Jam grizzly bears
They'll circle round ya
Come at you from behind
Grizzly man a crazy fool
Them big boys can run 35 mph
Jam leopards
They think nothin of jumpin a man

Some animals solitary
You never know their there

we got them black snakes up here too
water snakes - Nerodia Sipodon in the latin lingo
man - those guys!
wild as the come
they can get big for a snake here
they can get long as a sax solo
but not so long as thick
I saw one once by a beaver pond
& only saw part of him in the tall bush
thicker than my arm
thinner than my thigh
& i didn't want to see no more
and backed the hell off
couldn't see where his head was
they try to avoid you but ...
if you surprise them
or step on them not knowing
they are there
they will attack you
wham wham wham! into your act
before you can blink an eye once
they don't try to get away
except thru YOU -
not vicious but w-i-l-d
if i had an attack style
half as quick & half as sure as theirs
i'd be playing chess on the national circuit -
or in washington square park
for good money
they got their snake jam down
almost from birth
those that the bullfrogs don't get
grow & grow & grow
they don't rest up after a meal

a Nerodia Sipodon never lets itself go to waste
they jam from the swamps to the uplands
& all points in between
but not tonight
it's below freezing again
and any snake of any kind
what didn't make it to deep shelter before this

I got out today too - on the bike no less - man, it's been a couple of weeks at least with the rain & shit - I lost some edge not riding - but it felt good today - may get out tomorrow too - I hear the weather gonna hold mild for a couple of days - I gotta find some way to ride this winter even if I have to dress in Eskimo to do it - ha, feeling good right now though -

been reading more myself lately
today discovered a korean hammer jammer
i'd never heard of
by the name of Ko Un
his poems have kept me completely
totally happily fuckingly enthralled
hell yeah korea

hell lets get serious
owls in my cows
shit that didn't last long did it?
serious I mean
just finished putting the lodge
in daylight running mode
i got it down to one smooth move
from years of practice
i mean this is one of those zen things ya know
1st - you wake up - you lay there awhile
so passing thoughts pass thru
or come to graze on your mind
2nd - you get out of bed put on some pants or a robe
3rd - rub the dog heartily with your foot - he loves that shit
4th - take a piss - it's important to do this step right at this juncture for a man
my age - if ya don't everything from this point on will be rushed & sloppy
5th - turn out the porch light in passing to the kitchen
6th - hit the go switch on the coffee maker -
7th - turn and look out window/check thermometer for outside temp/ & no matter what you see out the window thank God for this day, for the evil & the good, remembering every moment that in the beginning was the Word & the Word was with God & the Word was God - jam on
8th - execute u-turn while coffee brews head into living room
9th - turn on 'puter/light/put on glasses
10th - return to kitchen - hook coffee cup with finger - add sugar
11th - back to living room, sit in chair in front of 'puter, punch up wordpad - jot down words that have gathered or passed since waking -
12th - take first sip of coffee ...
hell jam ya a symphony i will - it sounds like a lot expressed in words like this but actually it all occurs in less than a minute - depends on the variables - how long ya have to piss, how long ya foot rub the dog, how long you look out the window -
got grey skies here but it's up above 40 degrees
gonna ride today
gonna spin them wheels
think i'm gonna take my brush & ink with me
along on that ride

all of a sudden
seem to be between words,
color or somethin -
got my ride in today
testing out someone's else's bike
not like my little Coyote
more military stanced - wider tires with deep cloven tread
be good for trails & should be great in snow
but those tires make for a lot
of drag out on the road
they growl going along
they don't howl or sing or
make that wind-in-the-wires sound
like my Coyote does -

downloaded a book of poems by that korean guy
so i'm gonna go lay these bones down
and do some reading
then turn out the light
