half my life a carpenter
the other half a letter carrier
dealing with the elements
is second nature, always found it funny
in the summer when people
living in an air conditioned house
got into their air conditioned car
to drive to their air conditioned office
then complain about the heat, same
in winter these little steps into the cold
for a few seconds would have then going off
as my day was spending ten hours
out there in the howling wind, that's when
I learned about perspective, I began to see
them as weak and spoiled, but of course
we were each just chasing the buck
in our own way....I still don't have air conditioning
though, don't want to get used to it, never
turn on my furnace either, my wood stove
is more work but I like the work of gathering
kindling and carrying wood, I like the smell
I like the ritual, I like the movement, and
I'm always under-dressed compared
to the population, they think I'm trying to make
a statement, that I like the attention, seem
bewildered when I tell them that's not the case,
"I'm the same as you....I like to be comfortable"

which added a new steady thing to my life

you can put a heavy chunk of maple
on that bed, close down the air
and that wood will burn slow all night long
