I smell the sea
Salt and popcorn
The sugary cinnamon rolls
Seducing my senses

The rush: the unreal flavors of the boardwalk
Children run and scream with excitement
At the waters edge
Where dreams and sand castles are built
The birds 🦅 fly above in hopes of some leftovers
French fried and hamburger s lace the walkway
Candy makers and bakeries

It was here that love was discovered
Hidden under the pier; that first kiss

Then again as a mother
The waves sooth my soul
reason is over rated, as is logic and common sense-i much prefer the passions of a crazy old woman, cats and dogs and jungle foliage- tropic rain-and a defined sense of who brings the stars up at night and the sun up in the morning---

we were swinging on the back porch
my daughter Eria was six years old
we spoke of the sounds of summer
kids laughter. music from the BBQ
a basketball pounding the blacktop
birds and distant cars, an occasional siren
and without so much as a arched eyebrow
she said. "Well dad, you know...it's all just music"
today at 21, after playing trombone at Baltimore School for the Arts
and singing in Peabody Chorus, she has home concerts
with all types of musicians in their downtime
as they are passing through to bigger venues
and she runs another related gig in east baltimore
Charm City Blues Dance....guess dragging her around
and pitching that old orange tent at a thousands of
blues fests had an impact....but above all she was born
with a musical gene from lineage that was always involved someway
her great grandfather died while playing his guitar
in our backyard as kids....his hand frozen in a bar chord
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

I never knew if I mattered
being a part-time daddy and all
of a little girl
learning the ways of suburbia
and forgetting those of the woods -
orienteering
bushwhacking
rail-trail tramps
just didn't have the same penache
as
slumber parties
dances
or just hanging out at the mall
and as she edged into mid-teens
the visits became fewer
and fewer
as I faded from view...
...
but now
she asks often enough
"Dad, do you remember the time..."
("...we saw that baby porcupine running alongside us?")
("...you let me swim bare in that pond?")
("...that guy who got his Jeep stuck...
("...and we gave him a ride...
("...and he smoked in your car...
("...without asking?")
often enough she asks
to make me think
that maybe
I made a difference
after all
.
"Falsehood flies, the Truth comes limping after it." - Jonathan Swift, ca. 1710

She was a waitress in a Hungarian restaurant in Astoria Oregon- her friend was from Bosnia-
I always felt that the gypsy like smell they had of unusual perfume/ erotic- belly dancing wenches..but had to sling hash for a living- then there was the other job at the bed and breakfast- drank coffee like there was no such thing as quiet-or slow- do not dare insinuate that she is easy or she will bite you like a wolf.
A woman like that is tough- Alaska is still on her skin- Russia- the stain of being an immigrant at this time in America- she smokes weed and gets paranoid- brings people in off the street with babies and crazy stories- and she listens like a palm reader with those deep dark eyes and those eyelashes
Like a deer almost hypnotic
D
She ate things I could not say and things that I did not trust-
Like how long has this been in the refrigerator “
I get afraid of the sauce
reason is over rated, as is logic and common sense-i much prefer the passions of a crazy old woman, cats and dogs and jungle foliage- tropic rain-and a defined sense of who brings the stars up at night and the sun up in the morning---

met josie on the beach
like so many others at that time
saw her getting out of vw with Maryland tags
so i said what part of the state are you from
and she said Takoma Park where there's a zillion azaleas
and she asked me about barracudas
and we dropped LSD like long lost friends
and we set out in a raft of mine laughing
and telling stories, and when we finally looked back
we could barely see the shore. but there was no panic
she told me not to worry that she was a witch
a good witch...and she could see our future
would last for many decades, so we paddled
a little and a little more and a little more
and by sunset we were redder and happier
than when we started out... and that was a day in the life
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading
