I know now that sometimes
a man can live without a furnace in the dead of winter
been months now, getting by with wood stove
and some high tech space heaters
Some HVAC guy coming today to investigate
and officially pronounce the old National Boiler dead
guess I'll switch over from oil to natural gas
get rid of the oil tank in the basement before it starts to leak
and we all know, eventually it will
gotta say....new furnace wasn't budgeted for...but even
if I had planned for this...where would the money have come from
divorce kind of ruins a lot of plans
and so...on we go...into the cold night
doing whay a doo dah man can do

been using wood to heat
all winter
good wood
bad wood
dry wood
wet wood
so far so good
got a fire going now 3 a.m.
temp outside - 17 degrees
temp inside - 76 degrees
says it all

Oh I love the fire
The respect by all for those flames
Toasty and sweet-aromatic
Coffee and stars

Listening to the cackle and sputter
The songs had faces and came to see

steeped in contentment these days
I feel this odd calm with no apparent explanation
I refuse to say I've Seen It All !...that

I've lived long enough to know cancer can be
right around the corner
but so can love, and so can a deepening peace
in sports, particularly baseball, a hitter
that bats 300 is considered pretty damn good
but to hit 300 you must fail 7 out of ten times at the plate
and life is probably just the same. we grow
into good players by failing a lot, but unafraid
to step into the batter's box with that swagger
that can send you on a hot streak
