drizzling rain
puts a damper on plan to hike
so I will need to shift gears
drop down to the low chug
of getting nagging things done
here
inside these all too familiar walls
when you own the same house
for 43 years you might think
how many times have I mopped
that floor
how many times have I fixed this
or that
youngest son helped me rig the scaffold
new soffit is on the docket
but the rain
and there is the tree trimming
and the painting
and I refuse to give up
abandon the dive into the woods
so I grind a little more
seek the balance we all seek
strike a chord for progress
and good health

summer solstice
and still wearing a fleece
on our morning treks
to the state line
just the barest beginning
of a sweat
as we turn back
for the downhill ride
back home
the sun still feels good
on my back
the air sweet and crisp
like a fresh cortland
unseasonably cool
but I don't mind

a rainy day
damp, warm, & humid
but here inside
still cool & dry
from the chilly night air
captured a few nights ago
mister dog -
pooped, peed, & fed -
dozes on the couch
while I drink coffee
preparing flowcharts
detailing the latest interation
of the Project That Would Not Die
but no worries -
the way ahead is clear
so while the rain drums a tattoo
washing pollen from the skylight
and my car
I think I'll hack a little code

give the dog a tummy rub
and maybe even
get dressed

nature's palette
out and proud
river to mountain laurel
wild flower to spreading moss
trout fisherman
waders on and tossing the fly
three kayaks, one dog
heron and ducks
rippled muscular rapids
glass basins, steel bridges
the meandering curves
the boulders the pebbles
it's all there
I walk with stick and birds
singing so sweetly
concerto of the wild
untamed scenery
me a speck, not unlike a fisherman's fly
on the grand stage

specks on concrete
three friends melt into sidewalk
thoughts of hotter days

what should I say
about this madness
forget the news go to the woods
there is truth there
all this other shit, well
it' just plain insanity
and it ain't good for your health
and if you watch it too much
you too will become nuts too
just like those escapees
from the sanitarium that moved in
to that big white house
with the iron fence surrounding it
you can do better, find the peace
of the forest, find the balance of flora
find a few hours with no tv
no cell phone. laptop...can you ?
smell the air of the pine
let me tell you it's so much better
than that stupid thing swinging
from your rear-view mirror in the car
the woods jam is a healing jam
the woods jam makes you remember
what's real, the woods jam bathes
