the doctor opened
my heart chakra, said the plumbing
was bad, nuthin lasts forever dude
spare parts come in handy,
it's like rummaging through the junk yard
for a water pump in a '66 Dodge Dart
you unbolt the gem, carry it home
in your tote bag, clean it up
and swap it out with your defective one
pretty straight forward
and what a great feeling when
you turn the key and she purrs like cat

your time hasn't arrived
and besides
we can hardly afford
to lose two bards
with one stone
so put your feet up
and put pen to paper
or fingers to keyboard
and join in making jam
this is one kitchen
where you can't have
too many cooks

the healing jam
is a slow burn, not much
to get excited about most days
you just keep pluggin' as they say
gettin' up in the morning, changing
positions...sit here, sit there, lie down
but the pain is less and I wait on the energy
focus comes slowly, stamina as well
it's a waiting game
wake up, go to sleep
look for something new
I'll get there, I read the data
nobody cheats the guidelines
only day 18 out of surgery
so just gotta buck up
do the healing jam with grace
and patience
it takes as long as it takes

put on some music
allow a genius or two to soothe
a few minutes grace

drop in the bucket
infinite rings
my breath expands
i am your inhale
you are my exhale

the alien walk
the lizard breath
it's all a little odd
trying to do things
I was once familiar with
fake it til you make it some say
truly going thru the motions
lookin' for lost methods
the surgeon thinks I'm doing great
guess he should know, so
one foot in front of the other
till synchronization, til lift off

getting lost in the humdrum
yet all sings to me
as you can't be lost
if you don't know where you've been
enveloped in the sounds of now
life is pure
its up to us to make it close
who know's where the bulls eye

sleepin' better
movin' a little better
the stairs are a breeze
good exercise for traumatized body
good metaphor
one step, then another
ups and downs, sometimes sideways
hell of a storm last night
places flooded that haven't in 50 years
gutters jammed up, main roof
waterfall for hours
all i could do was watch
pretty good light show with the wind and hail
looks like another storm coming about 5pm
my tenant said she will unclog the gutter
I built easy access to the roof back in 2013
no more ladders and high wire acts
got a set of steps, a stairway to heaven

yesterday afternoon
band of thunderstorms plowed through here
distant booming, never too close
but the rain
40 days and 40 nights
in 2 hours
I was on the road
hunting for JPGs
wipers couldn't keep up
so I just pulled over
listened to tunes until I could see
this morning
air a little less humid
car cleaner than it's ever been
dirt road partly washed out
but passable
think today I might
complete yesterday's mission

early morning walk
still humid as hell
trying to find my sea legs
straight lines waver
my path is serpentine
feel like an old coot
but hoping the practice
will pay dividends
chest is sore, so is back
25 days since 7 hour surgery
the crawl back to human jam
I'm an inchworm
steady and slow, a creeper
moving imperceptibly
along the city streets on a quiet
sunday morning

old coots know the score
gotta use it to keep strength
each step with gumption

all in one in the same
crazy serpentine
drawing pictures
eight
back hurting
old age
but forwards calling
ain't no cook
if in we are all the soup

steamy in B'mo
even the animals are hiding
not much pedestrian traffic
siesta time amigo
time for iced tea
indoor activity
where is my book
the one I started nine times
