romper room jam

Post by Doreen Peri » August 17th, 2008, 1:58 pm

what i love the most
about romper room,
is peanut butter and toast
before my nap

we get to play with
blocks and build a fort

the teacher doesn't take any crap.
she makes us report when we
have to go to the little girls room
or the little boys

i love romper room
because of the naps
and the toys

In the land of Romper Room
there are two powerful princes
Mr. Do Bee and Mr. Don't Bee

I was first intrigued by Mr. Don't Bee
but eventually I would see
that wagging fingers is futility

So Mr. Do Bee got my pre-school vote
The Do Bee party is where I ran
DoBee, Dooby, DoBee, Yes, We Can

when i was in romper room,
that's when i learned about rhymes.
the teacher made us memorize
and recite them every time
we got bored.

romper room was fun!
except, oh lord,
the smelly days!

the only thing i didn't like
was when stinky johnny hayes
peed his pants.

he'd always do this little dance
and you could see it was wet
and some would point and laugh,
but miss nadine got really mean
and told us it was impolite

and i went home with that
stench in my nose every night
when johnny couldn't hold it

and to this day
when someone points and laughs,
it smells like urine trouble
to me

MIss Mary Ann
and Miss Nancy
all the hits and misses

The Magic Mirror
singing the days of the week

I always made my girlfriends at rest period
in my kindergarten there were heated floors
hot water pipes gushing under tile
we would spread our mats
and make eyes at each other
and feel the warmth from below
little did we know
"These words don't make me a poet, these Eyes make me a poet."

fridays were square dance days.
we learned the virginia reel and
paired off to practice.

in kindergarten, we didn't
have to memorize facts, this
was a task that came the
next year.

on square dance fridays,
all we needed to do was
pay attention, to hear
the calls, to follow the
music.

and even at five,
when we touched hands
or shoulders or when our eyes
met with a smile, we knew
we'd have to dance that dance
for a while, for years, perhaps

(you struck a nostalgic nerve with me here, doreen. Oh yes, I loved Fridays. We had square dancing too. Doe See Doe. Alaman left an to and fro. Turn to your partner, turn to your corner.

I particularly liked the do se do because that meant that you got to hold hands with four girls in about 10 seconds. Sort of like speed dating....haha)

I spent five years in a Virginia Reel
turn to your partner
turn to your corner
is this a line dance or a square?
I know I love being there
doe si doe
doe si doe
