The poster was always there,
framed on the wall, telling his
story, Jumpin Jack Coburn "HIGHJUMPER"
when I was lil I was always waitin for him
he worked shifts for the weather bureau
& when done he'd head to the links,
hains point, oxon run, glen dale where
he saw mickey mantle and was waitin on
iverson st. after i got off 3rd grade to tell
me all about it, round about 1962 i reckon.
We'd do the trip down to chesapeake beach
on the weekends amidst an endless chrome
line all the way to the bay on those hot
summer days of my youth.
Vague memories of streetcar at barney circle and ride up pennsyvania ave. to see the senators play the yankees in
'61, mick & roger hittin em out of the park in quest of
the babe's record 60. Then riding downtown to 11th & penn
and seeing real hobo's and the cool 5 & dime, big stores and
movie houses on their last legs. We were living on southern ave.
south east, wedged between the golf course, suitland parkway and d.c. Jack was always playin golf with uncle chuck who was a wild d.c. cop, when we'd go to play at dupont park course in southeast d.c him and his cop buddies would be packin their rods.
