Dreams of Rumi & Mitchum

Post by saw » March 31st, 2009, 6:45 am

Rumi was in my dreams again
telling me even the wisdom
of Plato and Solomon
can wobble and go blind sometimes,
told me Solomon's crown kept
cocking to one side
no matter how many times
he tried to fix it straight
it would just fall over again
to the side, again and again,
so Solomon spoke directly
to the crown, asked it
why do you keep tilting
over my eyes ?
I have to, said the crown,
when your power loses
compassion, I have to show you
how stupid you look,
just then I was looking over
at Robert Mitchum in the next car
both of us racing our engines
out on Thunder road waiting
for the that sexy little Daisy Mae
to drop her red bandanna
when I bolted up in bed out of breath,
spoke out loud in the middle of the night,
"Man, this is heavy shit!"
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

in my dream
Rumi and Kahlil Ghibran and Rod McKuen
were playing Old Maid
Mitchum was flipping through the card catalogue
with the calculated gaze of a gunfighter
spinning his cylinder
I woke up because my bladder called
"These words don't make me a poet, these Eyes make me a poet."

The Poet's Eye

I liked this part the best.
