her diminutive footsteps
hard upon the moss and lichen
pondering (always pondering)
and shaking her beak in disgust
urban incursion, intrusive
mammalian inroads
rankle pinfeathers
ungulates and bovines
munchy-munching
cavorting shamelessly
whooping it up
perplexed, she ponders
and wanders, aimlessly
through the zeeland
bush and bracken
there's a new herd in town
auckland not big enough
wellington?
not well enough, i'm afraid
what manner of biped are these?
pink and fleshy, with eyeballs
the size of emu eggs
unholy gobblers
traipsing through golden arches
feeding the bovine only to feast upon them
betraying the trust that is the hallmark of domestication
outrage upon outrage, sin piled high on a sesame-seeded bun
what is a diminutive kiwi to do in the face of omnivorous oligarchy?
go west, young kiwi
turn your back on the hairy biped
it may walk like a duck, but a duck it is not
