an open letter from Moses to his friend

Post by joel » September 7th, 2010, 2:38 pm

Exodus 32:7-14
Luke 15:1-10

I trust the joy is greater for the tents
of angel armies when a sinner turns to love
than ever for a mass of righteous folk;
love’s enemies at peace are rarer finds
than wholesome neighbors wholesome all the time.
But what about the greater joy for earth?
Remember when damnation’s wrath was yours?
It’s true: the earth loves golden calves, adores
a wonder represented; and we birth
our idle gods and you feel hurt--and I’m
the one who plays a father’s part, reminds
you of the promises you’ve made, the yoke
you took upon yourself as love. And of
it: greatest joy, when Love from wrath repents.

true. and yet the virulent strains of literal coming wrath remain so intertwined with a faith that also plumbs the depths of love and grace. troubling.
