Peggy Lee & Me

Post by saw » December 29th, 2010, 8:05 am

Peggy was a deceiver
made it sound easy, she
never once shouted at me
her music radiated into the room
into my often chilly heart, into
the cells like heat from a cast iron
wood stove, like a trumpet player
paying respect to Louis Armstrong
by quoting West End Blues
a saxophonist injecting fragments
of Lester Young solos into my veins,
my lovely Peggy would give a nod
to Billie with a gentle twist of consonant
a sachet of hips not built for speed,
my Peggy, could charcoal the pitch
tint the phrase with the sexy power
of a mama lion waiting in reserve to spring
on antelope ears innocently grazing
in creamed leather lazy chairs, stroking
those notes til they grew with excitement
waving, whirling, winding her jazzy bluesbrush
over the canvas of each tune, leaving only
her velvet signature in the corner
as her lovetones faded into the night
of my addiction
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

she was hip - always liked "is that all there is" - made me laugh as a kid!

yes one of her more poppy songs I guess you would say, in that it actually got play time on the radio back then.....an interesting question for a kid to ponder.....
