Ursula undresses ready for bed.
Removes skirt, top, bra and panties,
Sets them aside on a chair to rest.
The curtains are drawn; the moon
Shines through a thin gap where
The edges don’t meet. She peeps
Through, sees stars, moon, dark sky,
Street lamps below, the odd person
Coming and going through the street
Lamps’ glow. Gregory would have
Stood by her side once, his hand in
Hers, his flesh touching her flesh,
Skin on skin. Naked they stood those
Times, him and her unashamed,
Birthday suits clean and fresh after
The shower. She looks away, back
Into the room, draws the curtains
Tight, keeping out moon’s light.
Naked they were once, unabashed,
Young, rebellious, but he’s dead now,
Car crash, head and body smashed.
She climbs into bed naked, leaves his
Ghostly body space to move, kiss, love,
And embrace. All in the head, her
Shrink had said, your man has gone,
Is dead. But she leaves her ghostly
Gregory space to gaze and smile and
Kiss and hold, wrapping his phantom
Body about her to keep out the cold.
