Not a trick of mind or eye but you what ya don't see is the getting it up there - or the taking it off.
I have to put kayaks on and take them off a Grand Cherokee. My Rita is 11' feet long & weighs about 41#. Not a lot mind you but I think from time to time of not having to lift them, especially after an all-dayer on the water. And the Cherokee is not a low-slung vehicle, it sits up there. You have to get the boat over your head to get it into the racks on top your vehicle. And with the Bear you are dealing with a boat 16' long and weighing in the neighborhood of 80+ pounds. You are talking a hundred pounds or more with the boats you are looking at - and it's hard to explain what bulk - or length - does to the process of lifting. I think you would always need someone to help ya out - the best thing you can do right now is find someplace locally that sells this kind of craft, go there and lift one of them - just hip high to begin with, then try putting it on your shoulder and walking with it, then try lifting it and holding it over your head. Then imagine doing it every time you want to go to the water. I'm not trying to throw dirt on what you want in any way, to tell ya truth I came away from the pics on your links with a bit of boat lust myself. But my experience with loading & transporting & unloading kayaks and doing it all over again to get home and then having to unload them again when i get there tells me that you need to do this yourself to have a firm notion of what this part of it is going to be like for you.
Do that first before you decide on anything. Find a dealer and go do it. If it's something you can live with you are in the clear - you'll be the Lady of the Lake & Queen of the Open Sea & not Genghis Khan or even the Mona Lisa will have anything on you.
Inflatable kayaks have stirred my imagination in a mighty way and even after reading everything I can and watching all the vids where people look like they are having way too much fun this side of the grave I still won't know anything worth knowing about these craft until I'm in one and gone on down the river. The first five minutes of such a trip is going to teach me more right down to my bones than miles of text or a thousand videos.
I was frustrated because you first mentioned looking at boats and didn't say what kind of boats or anything so I'm left hanging going WTF! Why are we still having this conversation? It's cool, I'll live. Are you trying to piss me off?
With the inflatables it would be great if they do as designed in all aspects. Especially deflating them after a session on the water and packing them back into the carry bag they came in & throwing them into the back of Vera ready to go all over again. I'm suspect on that because it looks too much like a piece of cake. And everything - i mean EVERYTHING is under the CURSE - especially pieces of cake.
I've thought of building a kayak - from scratch. I lack experience, tools, AND a place to work such a project. I'm somewhat relieved that I DON"T have what I need to do it - otherwise I'd already be in mucho trouble.
Doll, you may have found a place of rest but I'm still on the trail.
