Re: Hurray for the Falkland Islands!
Jimboloco, that was a fine and fancy ramble. However, this thread is about
the Falkland Islands. I'm with you on the Spanish-American War in 1898... Not too long ago, the USS Maine's explosion was thought to be "spontaneous combustion". They had re-examined the wreck & evidence... The accident has to do with how the munitions cargo was loaded & stored...
There is nothing glorious about war whatsoever. However, sometimes circumstances and public opinions get us into wars... Our country's official
position on the Falklands War & territorial dispute is to remain neutral.
The victors, namely United Kingdom, have discovered oil there in, or near,
the Falkland Islands, and that is what is wonderful for those in that part
of the world. To repeat, the Falkland Islanders are likely to find themselves filthy rich fairly soon. It appears they'll be richer than arab sheiks.

Re: Hurray for the Falkland Islands!
Instead of another war, hold a soccer match between Argentina and the UK, and to the victor goes the islands

No one's betting anything on a soccer match. The Argentines just need to let bygones be bygones & accept that the islands will remain British territory.
Once again, our country's position on the situation is to remain neutral.
After all, we have American Oil companies drilling down there...

Sorry that was a bad joke. It doesn't seem so funny anymore.
I was just trying to think of a better way to settle territorial disputes than war.

From "If It Were My Home.com":
Here's a quick glance at Argentina--
Here's a quick glance at Argentina--
More Information about Argentina: With its 41,343,201 people Argentina is the 31st largest country in the world by population. It is the 8th largest country by area with 2,780,400 square kilometers. In 1816, the United Provinces of the Rio Plata declared their independence from Spain. After Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay went their separate ways, the area that remained became Argentina. The country's population and culture were heavily shaped by immigrants from throughout Europe, but most particularly Italy and Spain, which provided the largest percentage of newcomers from 1860 to 1930. Up until about the mid-20th century, much of Argentina's history was dominated by periods of internal political conflict between Federalists and Unitarians and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, an era of Peronist populism and direct and indirect military interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983 after a failed bid to seize the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands by force, and has persisted despite numerous challenges, the most formidable of which was a severe economic crisis in 2001-02 that led to violent public protests and the successive resignations of several presidents.

Oil, and land and trade, for sure!
The Brits had their empire

Re: Hurray for the Falkland Islands!
e-dog, the dispute is real & quite evident.
The Argentines want the British land & the British won't give up
their land & the oil. I get tired of repeating it. Looks like you
come from the Indian subcontinent...if your "punjab" handle
is to be believed. Take it with a grain of salt, like Ghandi says.

Re: Hurray for the Falkland Islands!
So they have always been British. And in what colonial war did the British acquire the islands?

Otro referente británico ineludible, el escritor William Shakespeare, estará presente ya que una de las fuentes de inspiración es su obra La Tempestad y sus Islas de la Maravilla.
