How important is poetry? Of what use is it?
I am reminded of a cartoon series, by title of "Invader Zim," in which at one point Zim, an alien invading the Earth, goes to investigate Mars.
He discovers that the mysterious face on Mars is a cockpit. A hologram of a Martian (or "Marsinoid" as Zim reasons Mars natives must be named) appears and explains that he is an instruction manual, and the last trace of the Martian race. See, they worked themselves into extinction converting their entire planet into a space ship. The cockpit Zim is sitting in is the cockpit to control the entire planet Mars as a space ship.
When Zim asks the hologram why they would do such a thing, it replies "'Cause it's <i>cool</i>" in a voice full of wonder and glee.
So why poetry?
'Cause it's <i>cool</i>
