Solstice to New Years Word Jam!

Post by Doreen Peri » December 21st, 2014, 3:58 am

JAM IT OUT! Write your hearts out!

Image

YOU ARE INVITED!

You who understand that hearts must be warmed in
bleak winter months, you who celebrate by sharing
the great light within you, you who enjoy decorating
the world with words from the flame of your heart.
It is a magical time of year! Whether you celebrate
the winter Solstice, Sacaea, Saturnalia, Yule, Christmas,
Chanukah, Kwanza, or another winter holiday or
even none at all – If you celebrate Life, you are invited.

>> When? starting on the shortest day of the year... the Winter Solstice,
Until the first of the year 2015

>> Where?
at Studio Eight - Uniting the Arts
http://studioeight.tv/phpbb
at the top of the page.

>> Why?
Because seasons cycle,
daylight wanes then brightens,
all life renewed by light & rhythm,
the insistence of an incessant star dance,
our earth on a tilted axis drawing a circle
around the sun, and the whirl of life revolves.

Because though we cannot solve a winter
mystery, we can discover our journey
connected to each other, lovers of
words and the art of the creative universe.
Because together we can light the world!

>> What?
Never been to a Word Jam? Word Jams are a series
of ongoing spontaneous writing events hosted by
Studio Eight dot TV
http://studioeight.tv/phpbb

>> BYOM
Bring Your Own Muse Or Get Inspired By The Muse Of Others

>> NOTE
Please feel free to post your artwork or photography to the Jam
thread, as well as your words.

Hope to see you there!

Re: Solstice 2014 until 2015 jan 1st... Here we GO!

Post by Doreen Peri » December 21st, 2014, 4:10 am

1.

And so we are here again, once more
the day when the sun is the farthest
from the equator and the way the earth
sits atilt on its axis causes more darkness
than light. But right at the very time
we arrive, light begins to seep through a
newly opened blind, our days become longer,
our bond stronger, our recognition of life cycles
renewed! And we will dance until the year is new!

2.

i lit the candles on the hearth,
the candles on the table,
the candles on my night stand,
bathroom candles, scented
candles, candles to light the
hall from room to room.

when you didn't show up,
i waxed poetic, wrote three
songs, two poems and a
sarcastic lyric about joining
the circus of doom.

it was quite a night.

After I wrote, I ate a lovely meal
by candlelight, read a good book
and listened to some jazz tracks.

wax is never wasted, neither is light.
thanks, you bastard, for standing me up.
i hope you had a lousy night.

3.

on the bright side , the candle abides
to set a lovely atmosphere,
light reflective each flicker a beat
of hearts in unison

4.

light strings spread
primary colors
secondary reflections
i'm behind my intentions
but ahead of the echoes
from moonbeam dreams

will wrap them around a tree,
say a prayer for me, lie down
in the silent night,
awaken to endless
possibilities

5.

It's 19 degrees. Wind with gusts up to
45 miles an hour. Wind chill factor
makes it feel somewhere between
a cool negative 5 and a balmy,
mild and pleasant zero degrees.

This verse is written in Fahrenheit.
If I had to translate these lines into Celsius,
it might feel even colder because the
numbers would be lower.

The good news is the weather doesn't
control the heart. Keep a warm heart.
That will help us all stay warm.

And wear gloves, for God's sake.

6.

i found a cold spot on her warm heart,
discovered accidentally through a troubled
word mishap,

chances being treated like an
emergency aorta probe, the whole
of each chamber in danger of explosion,
so she shut down quick,

iced over the soft spot, began reciting
a slippery mantra, undaunted by
any possibility of a thaw.

"leave me alone.
leave me alone,"
she said.

and pretty soon, even after
spring caused new tunes to
emerge, new blooms to become,
even after the hummingbird

flitted a thousand times a second,
wings beating a hover, his long
bill determined to enjoy
the sweet brief treat...

"leave me alone.
leave me alone,"
she said.

and pretty soon.....
they did.

cold hearts breed such dire certainties.
even spring cannot resurrect them.

7.

i blessed the festivities with the
best source of light i could find,

the kind that comes from
mind sparks and lucid illuminations
of dark interiors –

the style of which i never expected,
like a heartbeam reflected from
the genesis of doubt.

it is from such a place where i
have figured out the meaning of
light.... a definition i cannot quite
state –

not because it is too late and not
because there is no articulation –

only because of the relation
between me and the beam itself,
the both of us inseparable.

8.

the hummingbird is not a fool.
his bill is long and probes deep,
a tool to find a succulent nectar.

even the ice is not foolish,
though it keeps him from his treasure,
forces migration until icicles drip.

it is we who are fools.
we who cannot understand
the plan, we who curse the
absence of warmth, we who
do not have the fortitude
to wait through the cycle.

patience, brother, patience.
even dreams are cyclical.
soon we will sweep, circular,
to the top of the arc!

9.

silent snow
you can hear
the echo
of your heartbeat
slow and warm

holy snow
the earth
in a chill blanket,
beneath there lies
a dormancy.
all nature needs
hibernation

all is calm
bright multi-colored
rainbow lights
all is bright
reflect off a
chilled surface

feet wrapped
in wool socks,
fingers gloved,
pocketed,
counting
steps one
by one

sweet silent
snow, heavenly
peace

10.

christmas meant more to me when
the myth was true

when the night was holy, a sacrament,
incense scents and light, when belief was
eminent, the true gift,

my joy, my faith, the space between
all time eliminated with one moment,
the birth, the birth

now it is a lovely time of year,
but i insist it is much emptier
without the myth being true

on the tree, i hung a note
which reads, "you are
the light the world has been
waiting for"

but frankly
i don't want
that responsibility

11.

remember when i curiously questioned
the fact that dad's handwriting was the
same as santa's handwriting the
year before.

rude awakenings
often offer a jolt,
a sneer
and a grin.
the jokes on all of us.

but now i'm all grown up and question
the purpose of war.
nobody ever wins.
what the hell is it for?

population and real estate control,
i suppose.

i really do miss the twinkle in santa's eye
and his bulbous red nose.
what was he drinking
to make his nose shine like that?

at night during christmas,
let's recite the psalms.
then thank the good lord
we don't hear any bombs

ahhh but some hear them, right?
the joke's on all of us
some silent nights.

i bet santa and dad and jesus
all are hanging out on a cloud
laughing aloud at my verse.

but as dad used to say,
"things could be worse.
i could have the same
handwriting as you."

i tend to scribble, it's true.
shoulda been a doctor.
if i were, i'd prescribe myself
some decent deal-with-it meds.

'twas the night before christmas.
gnight... going to bed.

12.

sunrise
christmas
morn, depths
of pastel
in brilliance form
mysterious light
and the lyric refrain
was he born?
was he born?
echoes again

dawn witnessed
through a cold
window pane
and the child
rejoices, "he came!
he came!"

13.

I would love to write
a letter and mail it
to myself to remind me
what I was thinking
about this morning after
I said goodbye and left
without saying I love you
what if I had died?
while writing this letter (everyday
what’s ten minutes out of a day
worth these days for peace of mind
time and a stamp; surely I can afford
that?

I wouldn’t open the letter anyway
after it was delivered but if you were
to ask me what I had been thinking
about this morning I could;
it would be accurate and timely and
filled with thoughts I should have
told you when I left this morning

there it would be in the mailbox
recently licked) if only
I could remember it is there

I don't know if our member list emails
were delivered. Did Santa come?
Was there a card in the box from Studio8?

I asked if people were interested and two jammers
said GREAT! They're late, but I guess they'll show up.
Good to see you sixty-eight!

Thanks for your verse!
Mine were old from a previous jam, and what's worse,
all I did was copy and paste. May the grace
of the season be with you and please say a prayer for me.

I've chased
religion around the block a few times,
but God has left my heart and banished my mind
and the only thing I believe in now is LOVE.

Maybe one day I'll find it.
This is a new verse and now I've signed it.

"Reprise for Winter Solstice"

I'm here, I'm there, I'm everywhere. I went downstair...
I have a flair for ones who care.
So, if you care, say a prayer for the world at large.
The natural arch is beautiful this time of year.
I wish I was there, not down here.
I drove right by there not long ago... :D

Glad there is an internet.
Like being on a movie set...
Making simulated reality as you go...
Time's a wasting, but we keep up the good fight.
We'll champion the downtrodden as long as we breathe.
My mind is full of thoughts of winter solstice.
We all need a share of the "horn of plenty"...
Will we ever be "beyond scarcity" ?
I wonder what Todd Gitlin would say today...

Man that dawn drive to another work day -same road as every day-same truck as every day-same 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear as every day-same job as every day- wouldn't know this sky from any other-headlights on sun rising to my right-It's late fall the long ochre grasses in the urban fields on both sides of me lie flat almost frozen-the sky neither frozen-the sky neither black nor blue and no clouds hang within-the road bends left-then to my left-my view broken!!! White monstrous wings obscure land and sky from this side to that my world changes in an instant-everything even my mind in slow motion-it's wings lowered gazes at me with yellow luminous eyes-wings up turns left-I gear down 2nd-I'm now following the arctic visitor not 10' in front of me in my old rusted pick up-it's wings as wide if not wider than old rusty-hwoofh-and straight up I look but not a hint of what has made a change to the same-ohm....

Light candles in dark places.
Open your heart to love
and the endless opportunities
to give it. Do not be concerned
with receiving love from others but instead
give love through your eyes,
your embraces, and by helping people.
Leave traces of hope with every word
spoken. Give small tokens of appreciation.
Never miss an opportunity to be grateful
and to express your gratitude.
Please do not fight with each other.
Make the night bright with tender
caring. Be appreciative. This is a
method of living which makes every
day a blessing. When the sun rises,
know that it's a gift and give back
to your family and neighbors.
They need you.

I wish I had a pick-up truck.
I'd like to pick up a man.
He says he loves me, just my luck,
I hope you understand.
I do not have a pick-up truck,
so I guess I cannot pick him up.

But luckily, he has a car!
It's possible he'll drive this far
and I can see him where I are.

i'm so corrupt
i'll see yr truck
and up yr ante
'til the shrug becomes a touch
and our mugs nose to nose
let the ground erupt
and tuck us down neat
after the buildup
is a faraway ember
think of it - o we'll be so smug
eating peanuts at dawn
and jammim' on a snow covered lawn
Doll, you may have found a place of rest but I'm still on the trail.

i always think
winter arrives earlier
than when we can call it
the actual name "winter"

my bones been cold!
my teeth been chatterin'!
my sleep been splendid!

i had a pick up truck
in new mexico
ridin' thru the desert
blasting leonard cohen
and sipping sweet tea

but now its too cold for all that
how about a jam to warm it all up!

The internet is a dangerous place.
Can't find even a trace of my brain!
I believe I've gone crazy.
This is insane!
Call the lunatic squad!
Good God, I'm beginning to pray!
What's happening to me today?
I need forgiveness and grace
and to stop being lazy.
(But I swear I'm not lazy, that just rhymes with crazy).
I lay in bed sleeping with my phone.
I wait for the calls so I won't be alone.
This is an odd place to be for a pantheist.
I'm not a deist or a believer, just a hell bent
over achiever. But I'm praying I'll survive
'cause I want to be alive and the lights on the tree
bring tears to my eyes.
What am I going to do?
Christmas is nigh. I'm missing a ghost,
staring at pinpoints in the sky.
Soon the phone will ring.
I don't know if I'm going to sing
or cry and none of this makes sense
so maybe I died
and didn't know it.
I have a heart full of love
just need a chance to show it.
