She has him in her mind,
in her Venetian blind,
in the yellow roots
of the dead basil plant
on her porch, in her house
carpeting, in the empty Chinese
food carton they shared
on Friday evenings
She celebrates him in her mind;
she imagines he died poverty
stricken or did he die
of caring too much?
she was never too sure
He wasn't supposed to be the scar
over her left eyebrow, wasn't supposed
to leave his shoes in long hallway
to her room
She told him many times
to feed the cat and lock the door;
they may never get chances
like these again
