oh where did we come in on in this story

I have been writing poetry for how many years, since 70'
my whole life since I was nineteen I have wrapped myself
around poetry, I lived the life of a poet, maybe a poor one
but a poet nonetheless, I read the poets that I was drawn to
I turned myself inside out, lived for the words, looking for
the words, I read the French poets, Spanish poets
the beat poets and writers, and last but not least
I got into the surrealist poets, I went to open mics
and read my stuff, myself and my poet friends
who were like the fringe poets in a university town
us weirdo poets would get up and read in front
of the university poets, and they would look at us
like we were from outer space,sometimes it felt
like we were from outer space, In this town that
was full of poets, that came in from all over
my poet life lead me to meet two of the poets
that I consider the real souls behind the Beat scene
in North Beach San Francisco, these were the ones
that were in the deep core of those poet days
the ones that were famous but not as well known
as some of the others,they were not in the front
of the scene but more behind the scene
but now they are gone, like those others mostly
the days of the Beat poets is past, and there are
still a few surrealist poets out there, but the glory days
of a large group of poets who are surrealist and gather
together is long gone, it's all scattered now
like fairy dust on the wind

but when I began writing a lot of those poets were still around
and I felt their words talking to me through the dark night
of the soul, through the dark night of this world where I
wandered with my words
