the inevitability of the pregnant pause

Post by saw » January 5th, 2019, 10:39 pm

the empty page calls
it has a voice not unlike
an entity with tonsils and a tongue,
while steadfastly remaining absolutely blank in the face

another year has expired and been recorded
some old habits got worse with my intentional abetting
some new ones seem either healthy or benign
but I must accept that I could merely be delusional, and twisting my account

of history..., I like keeping doors open for the most part
but sometimes a good slamming with everything you got
can release the neurotoxins creeping into the pores
like a shadow along the basement wall on a windy day

Hey Buddy, Don't let that screened door hit you in the ass !

writing has unlocked so many of those doors....
the un-inked paper that insists you join her for a romp in the field of words
and usually I oblige, like the Dude....I abide
accept,... that this is normal behavior....for paper to call my name

and what about that pen there on the table, sleek and black
did it just wink at me ?....do I need new glasses ?
or is it my lot in life to accept every invitation
oh forget it..., perhaps I'm over-analyzing ...maybe I'm.......................

oh I see, I'm stalling again
while i wait for inspiration and creativity to arrive...
as usual they are tardy, and I've always been uncomfortable
when there is a pregnant pause
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

nothing quite as intimidating as a blank sheet of paper - or its digital equivalent, an empty Notepad file or Word doc. How many times do those first tentative words get deleted? There was no going back in those long-ago typewriter days - just churn ahead, hope for the best, and thank Zeus for 2nd drafts. These days, destructive backspace is like a crippling stutter - so hard to get the words out when it's so easy to take them back....

very much enjoyed your comments sasha....ah yes...the intimidating blank page....how could this lifeless piece of paper/ screen have so much power ?....and wise of you to make the distinction between the Smith Corona era and today

Yup, I had a little non-electric Smith Corona portable all through college - clackity clackity clackity clack *ding* - each draft double-spaced, to leave room for the inevitable hand-written corrections.... type type type scribble scribble scribble type type type..... mind you, I have NO interest in going back to those days, any more than I yearn for the slide rule... but word processors have blurred the boundaries between drafts - for better AND for worse....
