Jerry

Post by saw » June 8th, 2019, 7:52 pm

carpenter's wooden folding six foot rule
sitting on the window sill inside his shop
sawdust on the table saw, quart of glue
a feeling of forlorn washes over me like summer rain
when the black clouds are scary and the cracks
in the sky mean business, my cousin from Weyers Cave
nine years since his heart stopped beating
and his workshop just sits there, the daughters
will never sell, he built the shop, Hell
he built the house with his aging father, my uncle
stone and logs that were taken down
from a log cabin, numbered
and all put back together just like they
originally sat, built lovingly I'd imagine
by another farmer/ wood worker
the lights never come on anymore,
the machinery is quiet, and the spiders and mice
have taken up residence for now,
the son-in-law keeps mowing the grass
trimming the bushes, as if
Jerry is coming home soon
and well, maybe he is home being the man
of faith he was, but damn
he was so good with his hands that man, oh........

I suppose heaven was short a carpenter.

you may end up where you are heading

thanx mike....just returned from a visit to Staunton VA. ( my birth town) and the surrounding areas...saw 3 cousins...explored

was so moved seeing my cousin's folding rule....sitting 9 years right where he left it...he wasn't sick...he just dropped dead....

wow - what a beautiful vignette - poignant, earthy, & touching. Thanks for this.
