My Nevada Wander

Post by mnaz » May 23rd, 2024, 2:43 am

Years ago in a galaxy far, far away,
I slipped California through a gap in a hill
into Nevada, a different world, past fences,
over a ridge into desert solitude (is it real?)
until I was face to face with the great playa,
the great flat dry lake desert ocean universe.
There was cracked white clay everywhere
on what seemed the perfect blank canvas.
Infinitude to the north, thin trails into hills.
It seemed a realm of limitless wandering.
And I was mostly right.
And I'm still wandering.

It was good to return to that world this week. A good trip. Tomorrow, it's back to The City.

great northwest
wild green and dark
but
every year
we take a desert break
into the long views
the warmth
and the wonder
I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach 10,000 stars how not to dance.

old New England
pockets of wilderness
between the settlements -
fragments of primeval wood
shattered by civilization
dumbed-down remnants
of what was

(Well, I'm back in Dark City. Don't need to worry about sun screen!)

Yeah I get it
reason is over rated, as is logic and common sense-i much prefer the passions of a crazy old woman, cats and dogs and jungle foliage- tropic rain-and a defined sense of who brings the stars up at night and the sun up in the morning---
