I wonder if Charles Mingus
ever cut his grass, hell no
he was jammin'
having a gas,
I doubt if Ron Carter
trimmed up his yard
hell no, he was practicing
working real hard
layin' down bass lines
hittin' his groove
while I was cussin' and kickin'
the damn LawnBoy to move
I was changin' the sparkplugs
on the ole Briggs and Stratton
while Ron played the jazz clubs
in Detroit and Manhattan
while winning a grammy
for Call Street Blues
I was loggin' in hours
in my steel-tipped shoes
eleven hundred weekends
since 1961
if I'd just had a yardman
I'd have been Number One
