The Liberty Bill (click picture for larger version)

I have often wondered why defense contractors should make great profits off the very government that is protecting them.

I imagine an earlier mankind (kind?), when we were, let's say, nomadic. Foes show up on the horizon and the tribe collectively defends themselves from harm. Did the arrow makers say "I'll sell you my arrows for extra buffalo meat"..? I think not. Afterall the tribe was reliant upon each other for not only safety but for food, shelter, horses, health, etc... it was the tribal duty to provide for the welfare of the others as it was for the others to provide what they could to the same tribe. That was nationalism in its infancy compared to what it has grown into.

Now we have Halliburtons and Boeings and General Electrics, etc, saying, in effect, pay us what we want and we will provide defense for the country. So our government, in order to provide defense, is submitting to this form of thievery of our collective monies in order to remain safe. Who protects the Treasury? Where is the reasonable person that says, "Whoa! You, Mr. Defense Contractor, are asking for billions of dollars to defend the very country you are doing business in and are completely unaccountable as to how "your daddy's money" is being spent?" Sure they will present some papers justifying their demands, but when they are pocketing unreasonable profits it has the stench of dishonesty - because of their business they could theoretically sell to the highest bidder, regardless of what country it may be.

Despite what we think of our government being strong, honest and worthy of the founding fathers ideals, the truth seems closer to 'our government is subservient' to not only the defense contractors, but to the most powerful of corporations... those that have the best lobbyists buying influence and power at any cost.

Is this what "we the people" want "in order to form a more perfect union" where our own "justice, domestic tranquility and common defense" will not only "promote" but insure " the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity"?

I personally think that not only should the Ten Commandments be left out of schools and federal properties but an emphasis should be placed on posting our Constitution and Bill of Rights granted to all the citizens of this country, (not just Christians or any other faiths), upon the walls of all classrooms and federal and state buildings... including any and all government contractors that make their living off the same monies that 'we the people' pay in taxes.

From where I stand I clearly see there is currently too much emphasis placed upon religion and not nearly enough emphasis (if any at all..) is placed upon our most cherished of documents - the Consitution and all that it encompasses.

These are indeed dangerous times. The most dangerous is the threat of terrorists... and terrorists can take the form of many and all shapes. It is not just the Al Quada's, not just the insurgents in Iraq or Afghanistan, not just the Muslim radicals in Palestine or Chechnya... there is definitely a growing terror from the self-annoited "Kings of Corporations" both within our borders that are threatening our Constitutional rights of "Justice, Tranquility, general Welfare, and the Blessings of Liberty."

I once read a sociological theory that says we still live in a tribal society. The theory postulated that in a person's lifetime he could actually 'know' about 200 people. These are the people in his tribe.

But we live in a world where you may encounter hundreds of people per day. But you don't know them. They are foreigners, outsiders, maybe even enemies. Since they are strangers, you have no sense of community with them. If you are making their hamburger, who cares if one of your nose hairs falls in it.

Corporations are succeeding because they are tribes too. They have a sense of economic community.

But this is a double edged sword as witnessed by the Enron scandal. The insular community sense was among the top guys and the underlings and investors were the outsiders.

What do you think? Can you care for everyone in the world, or just two hundred people, or just your family or just yourself?

What do I think? is a loaded question! That's why I write.

But I get your point, which says to me that despite the call for national unity (nationalism), it aint gonna happen. It happens in every country no matter what flag flies over it, but here in our own country we are near 300 million strong and it seems to me the only thing that unites us is not a flag, not a religion, not a political party... the only thing that (should) come close in uniting us is the Constitution... a document strangely losing ground to the religious fundamentalists and the corporate greed that continues swallowing lesser fish in the sea.

I know several teachers and it is not in their best interest to in anyway belittle the very student body they are hired to teach, but other than a 2d grade teacher, the others are, shall I say, 'deflated of the one time enthusiasm' to teach... they pretty much put in the hours so they can pay their bills, and occasionally they find a few pupils that keep their fires burning.. well maybe not burning but maybe more like kindling... keep the teaching coal warm at best.

Now if these same students are not strongly taught the Constitution.. they end up being pawns of the priests/politicians and the corporations... ignorant of what freedom and liberty really mean. To so many of them 'freedom' means telling the teacher to fuck-off.. that they don't need no fucking education.

But I digress... back to corporations - once all the little fish have been swallowed up, they will have nobody to eat but each other. I forget which President said "the business of America is business," but that happened (I believe) sometime in the 30's... and business has never looked back... continually supported by elected officials that follow the line.

I'm not saying in this piece that our freedoms are in jeopardy tomorrow.. but as things progress on the Stage Politics the average Joe and Jane will surely suffer in comparison to what the country promoted 200 years ago... the same image that most people in the world looked up to. With few positive examples (I'm thinking Henry Ford right now..), the average person has had fewer and fewer examples to emulate. Does any half-brain respect the Walmarts or the Halliburtons, the Enrons, the Boeings...how about the Pharmaceuticals... all non-entities for the most part but they are calling the political shots with their financial power which just keeps growing and growing. If Americans threaten them with Labor Unions or with family insurance, or, or, or... they threaten back with moving to far cheaper countries to make their products.

You know, elRod... what I am 'seeing' and writing about could very well be inevitable... there may be no stopping Corporatocracy. It may be what the future will be for not only Americans, but for all peoples of the globe. A frightening scenario for one who is for individual freedoms and very much a liberal when it comes to those same rights upon others. But given age... well, let the younger ones get what they see as good for them. But until that time comes for me.. I shall continue ranting away at what I've missed as time melts into the west...

The military-industrial complex has been built up to staggering proportions.... built up so high that it will protect us from all our enemies, real or perceived. But who will protect us from the complex?
