Black and white. I associate contrast with black and white. I think of Ansel Adams' photographs-- the interplay between dark and light, and form revealed. B/W seems to accentuate it, I suppose-- no distraction from color and its more indefinitely-discerned wavelengths...

Mostly, I appreciate the hard rock sculpture of this place... It seems only the simplest of shelter or implement(s) should be enough. Contrast between human artifacts and landscape should be clear enough-- except that they share a common origin. And they might even resemble one another after some time....

Still, I think about contrast, about separation and return, and I tend to take separation too literally, too far. And the return shocks, briefly...

The second typically followed the first, which followed the second, which followed the first. In loving the spiritual, you can't despise the earthly, but oh what wasted energy at times...

But separation is only by degree... the powerlines and buried cables thru empty desert hint that the far-flung points are being connected. But are we communicating yet?

It is the shades
between the greys
and the way the
contrast of shadow
and light play
with right and left
and wrong and right
when you think you
can make out the
shape of truth visibly,

what you see is
transformed before
your eyes, details
more explicit,
colored by a
complicated
sunrise.

and yet,
it is in the moments
of right before dusk,
moments before dawn,
when the world puts
a black & white veil on,
that light is most
evident.

though,
i often forget morning
revelations by noon,
evening disclosures
by midnight.

yes..

the 'fade to black' never seems simple.

dusk confounds the eyes; not quite gray, but dim,
and how do you paint that? light has a few tricks up its sleeve.

doreen: i have an 8 or 9-year-old scanner and a 3-year-old minolta point and shoot. i'm not sure of resolution at highest scan setting-- probably nowhere near "high resolution". (i definitely need to upgrade....)

played some 21 in vegas... up/down/up/down.... enjoyed the flight back... i recognized a lot more of the landscape below than last time....
