kingdoms on the head of a pin,
and pins on the head of a king.
it really doesn't matter anymore,
what was jammed before, either or,
heretofore, going in circles with one oar,
there's got to be more than yonder shore,
storms on the beaches in days of yore,
the catacombs of sunshine and sweat,
temptations to owe my creator a debt,
and miss the ocean, so beautifully wet.

free form.

hell, that's not poetry, that's rhyme,
and i know there's no reason or rhyme.
hell, there's barely enough time to rhyme,
oh my god the crimes of time,
and the times of crime.

i wish i could write poetry like tom waits,
the reflection of raw light down a long rifle,
down the barrel of a bone machine.
i wish i could write like that.

if you take hiway 78 east from burns, oregon,
you eventually crest a rise and can see all of idaho,
not that seeing idaho was on your list,
but humor me for awhile.

if you take a road west of synapse snap,
out into the cells and arteries,
you may get a similar vista.
humor me for awhile.

on a roll, honor roll,
and time takin' its toll,
fare thee well and will will tell,
shootin' rubberbands at the stars like edie brickell,
one hit wonders, well at least they had wonder,
all a part of the same enormous blunder.

there i go rhymin' like an amateur,
stone cold rhymin' like stolid granite.
i need something a little more upbeat,
maybe with a little salsa or something...

just sing.
sing the praises of what is never finished.
come to chicago, come to boise, and just sing.
sing praises of the unsteady works in progress,
spied from long roads under powerlines.
yes. just sing.

I like that recipe. Turn the heat up.

Me, I'll just sip a lil' whiskey, strum a strum,
dreamin' of some south of the border sun spots,
where the tourists and scientists run wild.
Is heat the right man for the job?
Always, it seems.

I should get some chips,
some salsa like sirens.

into the mumbo jumbo gumbo,
cursed to forever protest the obvious,
to sip gila tequila on salsa balsa wood,
to crow at sunshine snakes like ravens.

yes, that's all good, but does it have a beat?
lemme see... one two three, after zero you see,
but the heat has its own rhythm, you see.

choose yr weapon.
poetry or philosophy?
which is it going to be, amigo?

take poetry, of course.
what is poetry but echoes of failed philosophy?
and what was philosophy but insular poetry?
choose wisely, mi amigas
de la salsa.
Salsa!!

life after the road
it is different in a truck
less cerebral
more visceral
not so much the view from that high seat
as the enveloping steel cacoon
the take to the max
no happy medium
doing it with all you got
mile after mile after mile
NYC to To L A
one long drive
losing your self in the diesel beat
the long ommmmmmmmmmmmmm of the deisel hearted throat of exhaust and eighteen tires hammering at the road
it is hammer hammer hammer
drive and drive and drive
trucker's nightmares
and white outs
fog shrouded terror
flying dutchman endless rolling rolling freedom
going going gone
the road
there is no other life
momentum is everything

now I am stopped dead
I got my toothbrush nailed to me bath room wall
But I look to to the west and I can still see eternity on a far horizon
truly happiness
is to ride
polymorphously pervese as a baby
bouncing on my daddy's knee
the sweet solitude and anonymity of the road
truly grateful for the road

truly grateful for the road.
shit, everything was the road,
hidden under my couch, almost missed it.
came that close.

but i'll never be the same for it,
for the idea, as the scholar once belched...
something about everything is the road,
or at times, nothing.
makes sense now
and then.

the road got me here
the passion of road
opened my heart
paid a ticket
flew me across an ocean
then flew me some more
got me moving, breathing the air of foreign oxygen
feeding my hungry lungs
road food
mind freedom
