Norman Mailer died two weeks ago

Post by bohonato » November 25th, 2007, 9:56 pm

I must really be out of it that I didn't find out until today.
But anyway, the Pulitzer Prize winning author died on the 10th

A great personality and a great writer.

True genius, no doubt. We get that a lot around here, sometimes. Oh jeez... OK, fine... here it goes, spoken like a true clueless peasant... Mailer was just one more brilliant asshole, yet another one. End of story. Plenty more where that came from, it seems. And if not? Well...

Oh, I don't know. I've known plenty of assholes, and very few, if any, were brilliant. But I agree, Norman Mailer was an asshole. I wouldn't go so far as to say Norman Mailer's are a dime a dozen, however. People pretending to be Norman Mailer, perhaps.

Clueless peasant? I'm not a pseudo-intellectual hipster who attacks anyone with a different opinion, you know. I just like (some of) his works .

when i said, 'clueless peasant', it was a toss-in, and I shouldn't attack unfairly. after all, the man survived world war two, the test case, the grinding, summary annihilation of tens of tens of millions, and what have i ever survived?

I'm still working on a theory.

i dunno..

clueless simpleton that i am... to me, if you stab someone, well, that's kind of a deal breaker. and that's too bad, really... perhaps even short-sighted and dull... my loss, i suppose...

seems to me i heard somewhere that dali may have tortured animals, but i suppose that's different... not a crime of passion maybe... are these powerful artists not really one of us? shit, where was i going with this? i can barely stand to listen to myself lately, but i gotta play the hand i was dealt. problem is, i'm a terrible poker player...

you know it is not fair to judge a writer just because he has a great personality

you risk getting stoned here if you mention anything negative about Kerouac.

His fifteen year old daughter comes to see him in St Pete. She is pregnant, strung out on heroin, working as a prostitute and on her way to mexico with her boy friend. He finally acknowledges his paternity, (I have read that there was an amazing resemblance, especially the eyes)
but you know it is so sad, the tells her go write books use my name. so off she goes. .
sad but it was the best he could do for her
so sad Maybe she would not have stayed with him anyway
I suppose he did not have a spare bedroom or maybe he was afraid of what his mother would say. Man I would rather have a daughter than be the writer Kerouac was.

I have read that On The Road was a story of white guys in search of cheap dope and teen age whores. Not my favorite book by him.
But he wrote some beautiful things. No more fair to judge him by his persoality than mailer, or bukowski.

sorry for the ramble bohonato
not sure if it is
I think so
maybe not

nice photo
no idea about him until I read an article some days ago in the local newspaper. According wikipedia: "Legó su ego a la Facultad de Medicina de Harvard", funny...!
This weekend the Ñ revista (something as a cultural publication of Clarín´s newspaper) had a special number about the U.S.A. but there was not mention about him.
Some of the articles of "The cultural imperio - how USA sees itself and how it influences in all the world" (red cover, cultural with the CocaCola typos)

Talented journalist, tho' no real visionary writer---and mo' conservative & narcissistic than many realize (Deer park entertaining). People rioting in the streets, Nam, etc. and Norm spent pages writing about sodomizing some groupie.

Burroughs shot his wife.

Kerouac ignored his offspring.

Michael Jackson molests little boys.

Th. Jefferson had slaves, had affairs with (i.e. raped) them.

Lenin killed a few people.

Bertrand Russell wanted to destroy the Soviet Union.

All great minds, artists, and writers are morally suspect. So fuckin' what?
I don't think 'Therefore, I am.' Therefore, I am.
