I think all those who are "here" should invite 3 friends to come here and hang out. How 'bout it? Got 3 internet friends who don't come here who might like to come here? Send them an invitation, ok? "Cause it's cold and it's winter and we need some body heat around here, yanno?

And while you're at it, send them a link to the book. We've sold very few books and it's a nice book and would be good if more people owned it.

I'm going to send all the participants in the book a check for $18 so they can each buy themselves a copy.

Seriously.

As soon as I get my tax refund. Hoping February.

ps: Doreen, perish the thought. You brought the book to fruition, without you there would be naught to pour over with pleasure and relish! I'm sure all here can afford the pittance that such valuable words and images cost. :) Thanks again for all your work, labor and monetary outlay, I know I'll never be able to thank you enough. *mega hug*

I think I'll buy another and slip it onto the shelves of the local Library and then wander in occasionally just to look at it.

ok well i've been told that i'm an idiot to do this but it's a matter of integrity and ethics.

First off, I should never have created a book publishing the talents of people I know and love (despite the fact that I was one of them), unless I'd had the funds to at least give each contributer a copy of the publication, and even then, if I did that, I would be considered an "opportunist" or "user," terms which were directed toward another webmaster who you all know and love who published a book with the contributions of members of his site.

The difference between this type of publishing (trying to create a document using the print-on-demand services available on the web) and traditional publishing (actually having a REAL publishing house invest in the product including production and distribution) .. is that I don't have a REAL publishing house. I have no money or distribution plans (though I would love it if all of you who are in the book would actually tell your sister or brother or aunt or uncle or teacher or employer or employees or neighbors or anybody else you think might be interested in reading the lovely poetry and viewing the artwork and photography... about the book) It took me year to put it together and lay it out and get it ready which included investments in 3 different POD publishers products for proofing.

Anyway... I'm not anybody's government. I don't offer any refunds. I don't tax you and I have no excuses.

I just feel that I never ever ever should have offered to put together a book using my talents in layout and editing and whatever else I'm talented at.... without at least being able to GIVE the person who is published in the book ONE copy.

So I'm an idiot... and now that I know that i fucked up.. there are 30 people in the book and I'll just buy them all a copy. It's that simple.

And later, critics can still call me names if they want. I don't give a shit.

It's a beautifui book. Truly!... My tax refund in february or so .. should cover this, I hope. Thanks.

Love,
Me

Doreen Peri, whoever's calling you an idiot, let me at 'em.

and secondly...

You don't owe anybody shit!

Rest easy, we are all grateful, thankful, and cherish you immensely. I, for one, will never accept such an offer from you, as kind and sweet and generous an offer as it is. And I stand firm on this. *stamps foot*

I'm going to order my copy now... well, maybe not now, 'cause I'm really tired... real soon. I just haven't gotten to it... It's been a rough couple of months or so... working thru some personal stuff. Long story. Doreen, thanks as always, and I can't speak for everyone, but I would feel better if I purchased my copy, since it seems money might be a little tighter than usual for you, and besides, you deserve some sort of partial compensation for all of the work you put in to make the project happen.

mousey1... you are a dear! You're probably right. I don't owe anybody anything. I worked hard on the book and it's a good book. It's nice. I love it. I'm so happy your work is in it! I saw your kind post on the other thread and I will reply soon. You called the cost a "pittance" and said you thought all could afford it. Honestly, I thought so too. But I guess I was wrong. Less than half of the people published in the book have purchased one. Why? I don't understand it. Cafepress makes $14.33 (something like that) on each book. The rest comes to studio eight but even if we sold 1 book to each person who is in it, that doesn't TOUCH what it costs to pay for hosting for the past 5 years. I pay for this out of my pocket. So, I truly don't get that people who were given the services of a graphic designer to put their material out in a book wouldn't want to have a copy and help out. Hell, it costs $30 to fill up a car with gas these days. Dinner out for 2 costs $40 by the time you pay a tip and that's not at a very fancy restaurant. So, I'm baffled. Soooo... the ONLY conclusion I have come to is that people don't want to PAY to be published. And I've decided they shouldn't. I'm going to send everybody published in the book $18 each so they can either go out to a movie or buy a book. Whatever they want. I've decided to pay them for their material.... the amount it would take for them to purchase one book. If they already bought one? Great! They can buy another one and give it away. If they haven't? Then they can buy one if they want with their $18. 30x18= $540 ... that's what I'm going to divvy out. If some don't want to accept it, that's fine with me, too, of course. LOL! I just want to do the RIGHT thing. For the record, I've already purchased 9 proofs from 3 different POD publishers. And I purchased 10 copies of the books and gave them away as gifts at christmas. Well, I kept one for myself. Thanks again for your kindness, mousey1.

wireman - sounds like you're having fun.

mnaz- Thank you for your contributions and for taking the time to purchase a book when you have a chance. I'm still going to send you $18 so you can purchase another one or do whatever you want with it. I appreciate very much that you feel I deserve compensation for my work. But basically this endeavor was a project to create a document... a record of our community collaborating together. Something to keep and treasure and look back on and read in 20 years. It was a labor of love for me. I didn't expect to be compensated because first off, you guys couldn't afford me.LOL... and secondly, even if we sold 10000 copies, it would not compensate me. It WOULD, however, help defray some of the costs for hosting for the past 5 years so feel free to tell a few friends about it, OK? Oh and money isn't any tighter than usual for me right now, mnaz.... except for the fact that i still have not gotten paid back fully by the thief who fucked up my kitchen last june. it MIGHT be tighter than usual if I end up between jobs which could be coming up. But being in between boyfriends hasn't negatively effected me financially.... not much anyway, if that's what you're referring to.... but i have no idea what you're referring to really... just guessing.

peace n love, all.... didn't sleep much last night so i better go take a nap now. Much work to do today after that.

Cool, Doreen. The 'compensation' I spoke of would only be some fraction of your time and money spent, of course. Better than nothing, I guess. There's no realistic way to look at self-publishing as any sort of money-making venture. It has to be about simply getting your art out there, if you feel so compelled. Like I said... lot's going on for me recently. Been 'bogged down'. But I'm going to make an effort in the next few weeks to get my 1st book out finally, at least a test-printing for godssake (before I lose the manuscript or something). May have to hire someone to help submit (and take good notes).
