Discussion on hotlinging - stealing bandwidth

Post by Doreen Peri » March 23rd, 2008, 10:21 pm

NOTE- This discussion was started on this thread
http://www.studioeight.tv/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=12348
where Lightning Rod posted a photo of Kurt Vonnegut.
I split the posts about hotlinking to this thread rather than
continuing it on the poem thread where it didn't belong.
We should have talked about it here originally. My bad.
Apologies

Stealing bandwidth again, I see?

At least copy the image, steal it and put it in your own flicker space, please? That way Studio Eight isn't stealing bandwidth.

We just talked about this 2 days ago.

Sorry.

Carry on..

hate to interrupt

lol

I'm such a bitch.

Stealing is such a harsh term.
Seems we've all stolen something valuable at some point.

Gotta love Kurt. From a different era (and educated by it).
Educated by unimaginable injustice. Stood up against the Bush mafia crimes. That works for me, for starters.

stealing bandwidth isn't something i want to be responsible for.. this is my site....people have been told over and over and over and over that they need to either own the images they post or they need permission to post them. If neither of these are the case, then they are welcome to steal them themselves, I suppose, and store them on their own server (a flicker account maybe) and then refer to them here.

That said, I love Kurt. He had a great face and great literature. One of my favorites.

doreen,

You are missing the spirit of the internet here. It's about networking. Sure, your content may be hijacked, but it builds the synergy of the net. I'm delighted when somebody hijacks my content, and the bandwidth only amounts to fractions of a cent. I will gladly pay that to have my content proliferated on the web.

And if you think that this is YOUR site, then you forget about all the work and dedication that I and others have contributed to it.

No i'm not! I can't possibly be missing the "spirit of the internet." This is studio eight for crissake!

Just get your own image hosting account somewhere, please? It's pretty fricking simple! Take whatever images you want from the net and get into the spirit and keep them in your own account and then when you post them on this site, you aren't stealing bandwidth from another site to do it.

Not that I condone stealing images from another site... I would hope that when you DO post them, you also refer to the original place you got them and give credit to the artist or photographer also (if you have that information).

This is a VERY simple concept.

Here it is.

When you post an image which is hosted by another site which is not an image that belongs to you and not an image that you have permission to post and is probably copyrighted, also, you are HOTLINKING ... which is not an acceptable practice on the internet.

Why? Because it costs money. Mainly that's why.

So... anyway... as I've said before.... please ..just don't do it...

Steal whatever images you want and host them yourself if you want but do not make studio eight responsible for this type of theft.

Thanks.

And if you don't get this? You are missing the point and the spirit of the internet which is we all need to be totally responsible for what we post.... thus the synergy.. which is what studio eight is about.

this shows how little you guys understand the internet
you WANT people to steal your bandwidth
it's cheap and it also means that they are linking to your site and content and advertising (which studio eight is not smart enough to have)

sorry to hijack the thread, Totie.
As you know, I'm not much for being dismissed.
Had to speak out when I wasn't being heard.

Carry on.

Back to you!

Get your own website and then you can make the rules and have your own ads.

In the meantime, read this

So You Have Decided to Hotlink and Steal Bandwidth

Hotlinking is Leeching

Everybody knows what my 'intellectual property' is worth....haha

This is such a non-issue, I can't believe it.

you missed the salient comment:
And if you think that this is YOUR site, then you forget about all the work and dedication that I and others have contributed to it.

If it's such a "non-issue" then please remove the hotlink to someone else's site.... If you like the image, as I've said before, steal it yourself if you want... and post it here from your own site.

It's really pretty simple.

I cannot be responsible.

this is not about YOUR "intellectual property"... this is about the property of others ... not only the image but the website hosting bandwidth

So.... like I say every time you post your column and hotlink images from other sites... please fix it.

thanks.

There is very good information about stealing bandwidth here

http://www.buffyguide.com/webmasters/directlink.shtml
If your neighbor secretly ran an extension cord to your electric outlet to run his appliances, this would be stealing your electricity, and your electric bill would go up — you'd be paying to keep his house running, and you would NOT be pleased. This is much like bandwidth theft — if you direct link to an image on my server, it uses my bandwidth, and I have to pay the bill for your site! This is obviously not okay. And it's actually pointless, since most of the sites that direct link are small sites on free hosts, so it's not as if they need to save bandwidth — for them, it's free, but for some of us, it's very expensive!
What should I do instead of direct linking?

You have two choices - get some free web space to host pictures on, or link to the page the image is on instead of directly to the image itself.

Get some web space of your own to host images on:

If you want free hosting, keep one thing in mind: Most free hosts will not allow direct linking, and will display their company logo instead of your image (or just a broken image icon). So if you get your own web space on Yahoo! Geocities, for example, and you try to post an image on a forum or blog, it will not work. Generally speaking, an all-purpose free host that does not actively point out that they do allow direct linking probably does not. You will have better luck with sites that specialize in free image hosting. Here are a few free hosts that will (as of this writing) allow direct linking to images: Village Photos - Photobucket.com - FileHigh - ImageCave - ImageShack - ImageHosting.us - PicsPlace.to - MyOnlineImages.com. For more ideas, search Google for "free image hosting".
