what do feel? what the fuck do you think about cults? not only do i want to know what you think, this is to broad a stroke, i want to know if your life has ever been infected with such pollutants. did you try one on for size? for kicks? did a cult infect your life in any word beginning with any?

tell me now. tell us all. what do YOU consider the definition of the word
OUR SPECIES made "cult" to be?

welp, I guess I made my views pretty clear on one of LRods' Eye when the discussion of the polygamous 'cult' in Texas was raised.

As far as cults go...my thinking is let them go...let 'em be...let them knock themselves out or drink purple poison koolaid or whatever they wanna do. Change the channel, tune out, we are lemmings, jumping on the first bandwagon that passes. Cultists, smultists! I am not about to think the world needs more policing about lifestyles of the poor and misled or the sick and uneducated. Sound crass? Babies are dying, young girls are abused, boys are regimented...but think about it, it is our modi operandi, we do this to each other, everywhere, in all walks of life but when the spotlight shines on one particular cult all hell breaks loose. 'We' get up in arms, 'we' need to DO something, heck fire with the innocent victims, DO something NOW! I laugh, I think the problems that 'we' create, 'we' perpetuate are insignificant compared to the plight of the honeybee or the rainforest or the wolves in Yellowstone, or, or, or...

Naw, I ain't no cult-ist and frankly I don't care or mind if anyone is, knock themselves out, have at it and reap what you sow. Me, I am growing tomatoes and peppers and wishing for honeybees.

Sorry you asked?
Freedom's just another word...

Thirty years since Jonestown took place. Things have changed since then. I remember seeing this one display back in the Eighties showing the dangers of the Moonies. This was at the church that folks attend. I've become friends with this one guy over on Youtube. He belongs to this group that is protesting the cult of Sciencetology. He posts videos showing the protests that he goes to every now and then. So yeah cults are a danger to today's society. They must be stopped.

DtD : "So yeah cults are a danger to today's society. They must be stopped."

Dave, my man... 'they must be stopped' reminds me of the Romans and the crucification of Jesus... he and his followers would be defined as a cult today, ya know..?

You can't stop cults or any fringe... just drive them underground where they can't be publicly seen or heard. But they're still there.

I agree with SooZen, to a degree, that if they're do their own thing by themselves, then whatever. But, since mental, emotional, and physical abuse runs rampant throughout cults, I consider the obligation to aid the victims the same as helping the spouse and children of an abusive spouse/parent (a situation that I have had experience with, unfortunately, within my family).

My brother, a staunch atheist and cynic, argues that all religions are cults. Etymologically I think he's correct, since un culte in French means a religion, I'm assuming that the Latin probably means the same. (apparently L. cultus, to care, cultivate, or worship). But modern English use has connotations of personal control that I think are absent from other belief systems.

To be fair, the Romans really did perceive the Christians (who I believe were considered a cult, though I wonder about translation) as a threat to the Empire, and one of the major theories about the collapse of the Empire (from Gibbons, etc.) was the rise of Christianity. Though currently other theories have dominance.

I guess I asked you somehow for the meaning of "cult"

. a rock group

We can ask Constantine about the etimologhy: maybe related with cult-ivate?, the ancient heresiarcas or rituals?. But here we assimilate the meaning to secta from sectium :?:

now, talking a bit seriously this is what I most tend to relate to the word cult from here (read: culto, spanish, no-dictionary). That´s why the first reaction to what you said it was sad & complicated...

. focalized social craziness
. manipulation of needs
. power abuse

we have here an specialist is sectas. Maybe you´ll have fun (or not) reading him: Siletta

I know we are all part of the circus somehow... but maybe a cult is the equal to alcohol for the Catholic Church... who knows!!!!!!

Greetings all. I'm "The Guy" who posts videos about the Scientology protests, and have recently posted a new one to promote the Sea ARRRGH. In terms of the word "cult", I bypass it completly and simple look at the merits and methods such a labeled group has. In terms of Scientology, it's a complete disaster. So I do my part and protest against ideas and practices which I feel take humanity than forward.

Besides, cults aren't ALL bad. Just look at Star Wars which has a HUGE cult following. Stars Wars has had a positive impact on the world thus far, right? ;)
