recent Datura photos

Recent pictures taken of my Datura plant, aka Jimson Weed, Angel's Trumpet, Devil's Trumpet and many, many other common names. These plants are known for their hallucinogenic properties. Parts of the plant contain atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine and is known for causing delirious states and poisonings in uninformed users.

I use the plant strictly for its beauty and after our recent monsoons the plant has given a second show of it's stunning flowers :

yeah, mindbum, that spiral deal prior to opening is perfectly wonderful. a hell of a plant. maybe that's why some call the flower 'devils trumpet'..?

interesting, mj, you relate the purity of white to the evil this plant could do to the unknowing... hah! made me smile, girl. (!!)

an ex colleague once told me that my mind doesn't work like other people's minds does. it muchly intrigued him that i saw things from different angles. i have no idea why i do or tHat i do. i just say what i think and sometimes i pick one thought out of many and run with it, otherwise it gets too confusing.

Is that the same type of flower that Georgia O'Keeffe painted????

DtD... Yeah, Georgia painted a couple (or more) datura flower paintings. She named them (1) white trumpet flower [1932] and (2) jimson weed [1936]. They are not unusual in the Southwest and very likely grew wild in and around Abiquiqui.

I think the jimson weed grows around here. Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie which just outside of Madison. There's main drag through there that's name after her.

Georgia moved away from Sun Prairie to Virginia with her parents when she was 16.

If you see any datura around there growing wild, take a picture. I'd enjoy seeing if they're another variety... there are many varieties!

How big are these blooms? They're just gorgeous! Trying to make them fit... might have to fudge it, distort it or something.

Do they have a pungent scent? I can smell them from here...

Actually the flowers are quite large... 3, maybe 4 inches across. Their scent is supposed to be quite sweet smelling but my sniffer is plugged up. They open up early evening and stay opened until mid-morning when they droop out, bam! one time only. A healthy plant will have several buds to keep the show going almost daily for a spell.

Saw some growing in someones' front yard down the street from me....amazing that ginsom can be grown ...but other things can not. A couple of years ago a gardener at our provincial capital building grew some out on the front yard of the capital........
