Girl's Softball

I had forgotten that girl's softball was an Olympic event. But I am mystified in general about what events are included in the Olympics. Where is golf? How about roller derby? (it would be a great way to settle international disputes)

During the 1930s my grandfather was a pitcher on a pro softball team. It was a girl's softball team. No, he didn't dress in drag, it wasn't Some Like it Hot. At that time all pro girl's softball teams had male pitchers.

So, my grandfather traveled in a bus with 20 girl athletes all over the South. He was the cock of the roost. The only man on the bus. What a dream job. Sort of like playing the lead guitar in an all girl band.

The Russian girls volleyball team is an amazing thing to observe. They have an average height of about six foot five, a team of amazons. One of them is 6'8". Plus she is gorgeous.

The Russians are playing the Chinese today. It's very much a David and Goliath story. The Chinese team averages about 5'8". But the Chinese are winning, not by virtue of size or power, but by virtue of agility and cunning.
