so even i could understand it
he turned me loose...

walkin' the dog
gettin' dark
(and cold)
he's running free
this way and that
far ahead, then back
for a treat
until...
his nose catches something...
and he's gone...
off into the brush
can't even hear his tags jingling
only the wind
and my frantic calls
dammit...
when his nose is ON
his ears are OFF...
double-time back to the car

and there he is
that sonofabitch
panting and smiling
at his little prank.....

covered in sauteed veggies

and then we shift
to our appreciation of the little things

blessings, but I say...I think

the rocks and water and trees

in a world with orange morons
in white houses...Give me
some open trail and a granola bar
that shouldn't be too much, let me jam
up the gears, jam up the tv news
let me dance a jig two hundred feet above
a river, let reflections help me see the truth
let mother nature grab my shoulders
send me around the next curve, eyes wide
heart pounding, brother to squirrel and deer
I dig the animal jam, they got it going on
scampering about in paradise, who i ask
is closer that that garden of eden I heard about

Headed for dress rehearsal in an hour.
Three costume changes and the power
to make it a hit ... or a miss.
Two shows this weekend.
I'm certain I can do this!

Got my tap shoes, top hat, and tails,
red boa, sparkling jacket, and accessory details.
I'm going to enjoy it. It'll be a the cat's meow!
After each dance, I'll ham up the bow.

When the show's over, it's time to do Christmas.
I'll hang a star on the highest bough.
But for now, I gotta get ready for this.
Who woulda thought at my age, I'd be dancin' in show biz.

driving up the country today

dad's place needs more grab bars
so I'll load up the tools
meet my brother
chat about our father's prospects
when he gets out of rehab
and will eat our lunch and talk
about the Terps ( University of Maryland's basketball team)
for the outsider, Terps is a nickname
for terrapin ...which is a turtle in these parts
and then we'll go back to work
listening to rock and roll that soothes
