The Seed
The Seed
the old man told me
as we split wood
of what he saw last night
inside the seed
he began with "do you know..."
i been splitting wood with him
every day for two weeks
& on this last day of this job
he asks me, "do you know..."
we finish the last piece & look at the piles
of split wood now waiting
to be hauled off -
- he finishes telling me too,
of what he saw inside the seed -
we gather up the tools
cover the splitter from rain
pick up our jackets
head out to our homes
when i get to mine
my hound greets me with his howl
i scratch behind his ears
the wife asks me, "Is it finished,
is all the wood cut?"
I answer yes
then i say to her
"hey, do you know ..."
as we split wood
of what he saw last night
inside the seed
he began with "do you know..."
i been splitting wood with him
every day for two weeks
& on this last day of this job
he asks me, "do you know..."
we finish the last piece & look at the piles
of split wood now waiting

- he finishes telling me too,

then i say to her
"hey, do you know ..."
Doll, you may have found a place of rest but I'm still on the trail.
Re: The Seed
can't beat a little mystery for a good yarn, and add an old man's thoughts that he shares while working, and you really got something...

Re: The Seed
sure like this- the man seems like a real character- the hound is a nice touch of affection- i can almost smell the wood- what kind? cedar-?mmmmm
reason is over rated, as is logic and common sense-i much prefer the passions of a crazy old woman, cats and dogs and jungle foliage- tropic rain-and a defined sense of who brings the stars up at night and the sun up in the morning---
Re: The Seed
Thx Jana, I've met a host of interesting characters since moving over here to the plateau - my landlord for one - 82 yrs old, made 36 jumps into war in Korea, and he ain't in no nursing home now - the man's a mover and shaker - only one of two ways this kind of guy is going out - either in his sleep or by an act of God - the guy I was cutting wood with he's in his seventies - the wood we cut is hard maple - huge trees whose trunks were cut into sections - we cut up those sections and then cut it down into stove size - it's gonna burn clean & hot the sunlight that's still locked up inside that wood - Thx, Jana
