My Friend Larry
(Alternate titles “A Book Full of Green Goo” or “The Green Goo Book”)
©2009 Beth Isbell
First Character:
Do you like my friend Larry,
I tell you I do,
even though he’s quite sick,
Do you like him, I do.
Second Character:
No, I must tell you,
I say I do not,
‘fore the tip of his nose
is just dripping with snot.
And the scene that he’s causing
with nose running green,
is no laughing matter,
not for you, not for me.
Afraid all are we
that we might catch it too,
and not one of us wants
a green nose full of goo.
And the germs spread like worms
as they fly through the air,
Still he coughs and he coughs
like he’s just not aware.
And if we catch it too,
think of all that we’ll miss,
no more fun, no more school,
no more play, not with this,
All our mothers will say
“off to bed, doctor’s orders,”
while our noses run green
and they sort us with sorters.
Put them all over here,
all the mothers will say,
the ones with green noses,
we must keep them at bay.
Lock them up quickly,
before all their green goo,
flies into our air,
and lands on us too!
And just think of the troubles
we might cause in our bubbles,
making more and more goo,
needing help on the double!
And armies of doctors,
all armed with big needles,
might come to the rescue,
riding high on big beetles!
And they might give us shots
to get rid of the snot,
Now, that’s not something I want,
No I don’t, I do not!
Then some nurses might say,
“Oh, these shots aren’t so scary,”
but I think it’s a trick,
No, don’t listen, be wary.
And then we might cry,
and we might make a scene,
we might jump and run,
or just maybe we’ll scream.
No, the more that I think
of this green snot dilemma,
the more that I want
to avoid this problema.
Yes, keep him away,
in the farthest of places,
all alone to himself,
nowhere near to our faces.
First Character:
But I liked him before
his nose filled with green goo,
and despite your tall tales,
I still like him, I do.
And shots aren’t so scary,
I just had one last week,
so despite all your worries,
the situation’s not bleak,
And if we don’t cry,
we might even get candy,
so it’s just not so bad,
even if it’s not dandy.
But you’re still partly right,
‘fore even I too,
want to avoid his green plague
and a nose filled with goo.
So I’ve thought up an idea
to avoid all this mischief,
I’ll just lend my friend Larry
my grandfather’s kerchief!

……..
Post-Script:
HA-CHOO! HA-CHOO!,
HA HA, HA HA, HA-CHOO!
And when somebody sneezes,
please tell them, “Bless You!”
(Story marketing idea - attach a toy bag of green goo
to inside front or back cover of book)
