eve on new mexico

Post by justwalt » February 1st, 2009, 3:07 am

with no warning, no voice
heavy steps announced its
presence, my sleep ruptured
blood flushing, I rise
quickly, spirit wounded
already by...
alone, I and... it has
no image, no shadow, but
that sound...
again, closer,
solid and heavy, even
in the desert sand...
that sound... that...
I will run, I turn to look
it steps again...
the pitch black night,
the highway... too far to...
it approaches, eyes strain
but only blackness,
no choice, I charge it!
it abates...
I bleed, but........silence...
...I,
exhausted,
rest

I would've loved this to be some weird
spiritual experience, even though it felt
very evil that night and I was lucky not
to piss my sleeping bag, but managing
to stand my ground and challenge what
I couldn't see through the pitch black
night has its place in news of the weird.

Justwalt, you captured the experience with the brilliance of an artist in command of his craft. I've camped in New Mexico. The place drew me years ago. The title drew me in, but the poem gripped me throughout.

Can't say that I have Walt. That does sound like a possible explanation for what you experienced.

The women that spoke to me the next morning knew
the field where I slept. They told me there was a bull
in that field. Now, I know that bulls occupy fields separate
from other animals...it was something heavy from the
sounds I heard....though, a havalena could grow to
100's of pounds. I don't think the havas- would be so
close to the activity of humans. Could be though. I have
looked at this field on google earth...It is just after the last
on-ramp to rt. 40 W out of Albuquerque, north side.
