Playing Dominoes

What if the whole world woke up?
And we stopped buying the American dream.
Advertising shriveled away
Walmart went out of business
Along with Macys
Because folks looked inward
For fulfillment
Finding treasures under the dross of consumerism
Never imagined in the mania of media

Old men’s wars toppled like dead trees
Leaving green peace
To mesmerize our minds
Coca Cola symbolically died
As zeitgeist shifted
No more reasons to fight
Would war truly end?

Or would some madman resurrect it?
If people got smarter
Would we be safer?
Not being brainwashed
By domino theories
Or regime change follies
Or are there more roads to suicide
Than one?

Nice, John. Yes, the hyper-capitalist-consumerist global economy definitely seems unsustainable in its current trajectory.

And I'm not sure people will ever get smart enough (or collectively empowered enough) not to be fooled by imperial madmen. By the time each generation is smart enough, it is the "generation past", not the generation on the front lines... But it's a nice vision.

NAZZ, the gullibility of people never ceases to amaze. I believe even formal higher education does more to brain wash than to liberate. A liberal education imparts, with some exceptions, the delusions of the past. The class structure is one social pathology which colleges reinforce prodigiously.

this is a great poem john, rampant consumerism has destroyed the soul of america, the dream we like to refer to from time to time perverted by corporations that use brilliant minds to advise them how to manipulate the public.....and now we are bankrupt, literally as well as spiritually and have know clue how to be happy since they revoked our credit cards.....I like your approach here, the ideas and questions you pose....america needs to remodel her image into something that will sustain the population without buying.....let AIG and all the rest go down the sewer, and we'll build it all anew with Mom and Pop stores all over again, one community at a time...oh yea, don't forget to volunteer, you will be paid in the long haul...
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

Saw, maybe we'll get back to the basics of life. Corporations have devoured our lives with rapacious exploitation. I wonder if, even in the face of this crisis, corporations will really loosen their stranglehold on our citizens. That may be for future generations to see. Thanks for your thoughts on these things. I hope you are right.

everyone feels something coming this way soon enough...yes, with
the (again) new found round of human enlightenment catching on,
there will be increased pressures toward peaceful solutions...which
in turn, will push the greedy into a higher gear as well. It's in the news
every day now. Peace-time has its problems too... whatever is in the
near future will test all humans, in ways that money will not
be a deciding factor.

I'm sorry you guys
but what world are you living in?
I was once a young hippie
and thought that love could change the world
but the ideas expressed in this thread are just naive

it would be nice if everyone came to their senses
if everyone loved their brothers and trusted them
but let's face it guys
it ain't gonna happen

all we can do is act locally
love and equality and justice are good ideas
but we can only make the work on a local level
like as far as our breath will reach
"These words don't make me a poet, these Eyes make me a poet."

Dream globally. Act locally. Of course. Got it.

Does that mean we're not allowed to post the ideal anymore?

I really don't expect to live to see the good stuff, I expect to see a huge spiral into some really fucked up world come first...no, no, no, don't let me sound like an optimist...to be clear, I mean to say, that people are starting to see the truth of why we are in our current position as a global society, which makes the real greedy scam us even more. Right in your face lies from our government, then some octomom story to distract us...you said it...a collapse is what I tend to expect...and that might even be fun
