U.S. Soldier Held In Iraq 10-Year Veteran

Post by still.trucking » May 12th, 2009, 8:17 pm

Up to one-fifth of the more than 1.7 million who have served in the two conflicts are believed to have symptoms of anxiety, depression and other emotional problems. Some studies show that about half of those who need help do not seek it.

Soldier Charged In Iraq Shootings Showed Stress
On the All Things Considered NPR radio show today about the murders at the Stress Center in Baghdad they mentioned a joke about the macho military culture and soldiers who seek relief from stress. This is the joke.

The military is about killing the planet to "save it"-- people and things. This is no exotic, glamour job, no "paid education", necessarily --if things "go wrong". What I think a lot of wide-eyed patriotic types who never wanted any more than to just "serve their country" at this point may not realize or don't stop to think about enough is the increasing frequency with which "things will (continue to) go wrong" according to the wealthiest 1% of us who would send the other 99 % of us into an endless series of "noble conflicts" to protect goddamned "interests." Orwell was not just some crackpot. He knew what time it was. It's not that I don't get the concept of sacrifice. Ok maybe it is. What the fuck. You can point to the timeline throughout history and say this conflict or that one was unavoidable or "necessary". You can point to far more along the timeline and conclude they were pure bullshit, that's all.

I must seem like a horrible person to some when I make posts like this. And no, I am not some smartass know-it-all. What I don't know far outweighs what I do. Yet I know enough. And someone has to say these things from time to time. Sorry. If not me, then someone else for sure.

I used to like to watch the preachers on TV. It is good to know GOD is on our side. I especially liked when they have some rabbi on the show to talk about military miracles.

It is an ill wind that blows no good. With the downturn in the economy the army is having no trouble filling its ranks with new recruits.

What the hell good are our ten thousand nuclear weapons doing us if we are afraid to use them. We can solve so many world problems with them.

Just a thought. I am in a particulary weird mood today. Sorry

I think I will go listen to Reverend Hagee talk about dead arabs to the left dead arabs to the right onward charged the six hundred bombs burst in the dawns early light we could see dead enemies every where.

Jesus loves me yes I know, but most of all Jesus loves dead enemies.

Sorry Nazz, what you said about Orwell makes so much sense. I sometimes have trouble making sense out of war. For whatever reason young americans go to war I must have compassion for them. Not the lip service my government has paid to them. If Obama surivives the Defense Department will become the war department. a more effective military force. Big flap in the news because someone said that returning veterans are prime recruits for home grown extremist groups. That story faded off the news pretty fast. Nothing wrong with extremist groups. You know extremism in the defense of ...Goldwater

I am a worse Quaker than a Jew I think. To even think those thoughts. Maybe I am a Nixonian Quaker :?

So here it is the sixties again, but without a draft. A much kindler gentler vietnam legacy of Bush 43.
