Cecil, I have to agree with you in principle. But while your statement is impactful, it really has little to do with the whole 2nd Amendment issue. I stand by my above statement. Take away the right to bear arms and criminals will still bear them and aim them at the innocent. A gun ban will never change this fact. And if only the gov't has the right to bear arms and the citizenry is legally barred from doing so, well...that's a pretty grim picture of incipient tyranny and/or totalinarianism.A right to bare arms stops when the arms are aimed at the innocent... or should be.
True in at least one case I was thinking of when I made my post: Great Britian. Pretty hard to call Great Britian either tyrannical or totalitarian. But I bet if we googled the right words and phrases we'd find that every totalitarian society ever had a ban on the citizenry owning weapons. I'm just speculating though. Many other countries have either no right to bear arms or a limited right at best, but I'm not sure these countries have a tyrannical or totalitarian-style government
I wonder if this why we are also a citizenry enjoying some of the greatest freedoms in the entire world. The fact that you and I can discuss this in public with impunity is a case in point. My balloon release that I do every year is another. Unlike this last event, it's usually done with two hundred balloons or more from a public park. I advertise it freely on the internet. I've notified news media and city gov't organizations about it. I've never been hassled by anyone. Ever. That's freedom. Freedom to criticize and protest beyond simple discussion. After 250 years of the 2nd Amendment, I can only assume it is why I have this freedom. Say they put a gun ban in the Constitution 250 years ago. Do you think you and I would still be so free? After some 250 years of the 2d amendment, our country is the most armed citizenry in the entire world.
When we in America begin to love ourselves again, we will no longer be a bastard nation or a country of nut jobs. It's not the fucked up nature of American society that produces this attitude. It's this attitude that produces the fucked up nature of American society. You are what you believe in. Ask the creative visualization "nut jobs." They'll tell you. Don't like the America you see? Visualize a better one.I wonder if it has something to do with us being the mother of all bastard nations. Europe got rid of its nut jobs by sending them to the new world?

You might call these my balloons. My thought balloons."Inheriting from the Protestant tradition a conscience which insisted that intellectual work should be directed toward the relief of man's estate, I like so m any of my generation, lived through the superannuating of the political categories....Those of us who are temperamentally incapable of embracing the politics of sin , cynicism, and despair...."
