LingOL at Nazz's post. Effing hi-larious, dude.
Conversely, what if aliens showed up tomorrow and said, "YOU believe in God??? We have to blow you up now."
Yes, yes, the aliens could think that way. I just have a suspicion that a belief in goodness - godliness, if you will - is most likely universal in the universe. And I suspect that the switch from poly- to monotheism on Earth had perhaps more to do with shifting spheres of influence in the galaxy than cultural evolution on this minor planet orbiting a lonely star in the backwoods of the Milky Way. "On Earth as is is in [the] heaven[s]" and all that, you know? Spheres of political, religious and economic influence shift all over the face of this globe all the time. Why should it be any different in the wider world of the galaxy? Perhaps we moved into a new shere of influence back then? Or one expanded to included us?
When I posted I was minded of an episode of, I think it was Amazing Stories, but it could have been the Twilight Zone redo in the 80's. In it, aliens showed up in huge ships hovering over all major cities on Earth. (How many movies have we seen that in?) Somehow, the political leaders of Earth got it in their heads that the aliens were going to destroy Earth because world peace had not come about yet, that we were still too militaristic. So they hammered it all out at the UN over a period of days or weeks. They finally did it. World Peace for all time. All weaponry was destroyed or otherwise neutralized. When the alien spokesperson came back down to talk to them, the leaders of Earth proudly held up the thick tome they had put together, the document establishing World Peace. The alien spokesperson began to giggle, then progressed on to gales of laughter. Through his mirth he explained that the Earth leaders had misunderstood. It wasn't World Peace the aliens wanted. They wanted a fighting force, an army. Earth had now destroyed all their weapons. Their capability as a fighting force was no more. They aliens now would have to blow them up. It was really very sad and wasteful from the point of view of the aliens.
So yeah, I get you Cecil. You just can't know for sure. Other than looking into your heart, that is, and using what you see there to speak your mind.
As I stated above; God is like the flag...Not the thing itself, but the symbol. If one keeps this in mind, there is no debate.
Peace,
Barry
